In The Life Of Intimacy Coach Pallavi Barnwal: Fighting Perverts, Breaking Social Taboos & Educating Sexual Well-Being https://www.india.com/women/in-the-life-of-intimacy-coach-pallavi-barnwal-fighting-perverts-breaking-social-taboos-educating-sexual-well-being-6217186/ Wed, 09 Aug 2023 18:13:11 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6217186 India’s culture is changing significantly as a result of its rapid development, yet it nevertheless supports a number of deeply rooted traditional beliefs around particular issues like sex education, mental well-being, and abusive marriage, among others. India.com got in touch with intimacy coach Pallavi Barnwal who spoke extensively about the challenges she faced as a sexual wellness expert. Barnwal also revealed how her sexless marriage and lack of emotional compatibility drove her to be where she is today.

WHO IS PALLAVI BARNWAL, INTIMACY COACH BREAKING SOCIETAL TABOOS?

Pallavi Barnwal worked in product strategy and customer service for 10 years before she become a full-time sexuality educator. She started her journey of re-education by pursuing a certification in Adolescent Sexuality Education by Tarshi (Talking About Reproductive and Sexual Health Issues), a Delhi-based NGO specialising in SRHR (Sexual and reproductive health rights). She completed numerous certification programs to be officially labelled as an intimacy coach. Pallavi Barnwal is also the community head at Yoniverse, coto and founder at getintimacy. The intimacy coach has also built a sex-positive community that is built on a sense of sisterhood. They talk about everything related to sex, health, relationships, fears, and lived experiences.

Pallavi Barnwal, who is now a sexuality and intimacy coach in India, developed this network of support while overcoming her personal obstacles. She became a conduit for change when it came to people disclosing their sex-related problems.

HOW DID PALLAVI BARNWAL BECOME AN INTIMACY COACH?

Pallavi Barnwal shared how her first sexual experience left her vulnerable and scared. Her friend slut shamed her and the gynaecologist only offered judgements. After her marriage, she lacked emotional compatibility with her partner and stayed in a sexless marriage for five years. She said, “Everywhere I went for advice or help, I was told to go on vacation, wear sexy clothes or watch porn. But no one could truly help me or even listen to me properly. I started writing about my experience on my blog, which went viral.”

Once her blogs went viral, Pallavi Barnwal received several requests for assistance. She realized how many individuals lacked information and required true assistance, direction, and instruction. This is when she made the decision to further her education and learn whole new abilities in order to turn into the supporter she always wished she had.

PALLAVI BARNWAL OPENS UP ABOUT HER JOURNEY

Pallavi Barnwal believed that talking about sex was no easy task in a society where sex is taboo. She revealed how men approached her with the hidden intention of sleeping with her. They came with a typical mindset that she might be ‘available.’ Pallavi said, ” I have been objectified and a lot of men online have treated me with utter disrespect and lechery. One follower recently commented on a post I had published on oral sex. He said – ‘If you are so knowledgeable in such things, prove it to me by giving me a practical class.’ Many men believe that because I talk about sex, they are entitled to have sex with me and covertly insult me behind a social media screen. Unfortunately, it is not just those prejudiced men but even educated people like therapists.”

Pallavi Barnwal continued, “Sometimes I get calls from random men who have tracked down my number and have even had a man ask me what I would charge to have sex with me. These were all horrifying experiences that have shaken me to the core.”

HOW DOES PALLAVI BARNWAL PUSH HERSELF?

Pallavi Barnwal revealed that challenges keep her motivated as they remind the importance of her work. The intimacy coach revealed that she keeps going for her clients and how she is making things better for them. She told us that knowing that she had made a difference in her client’s life and the belief that there are more people out there who need her keeps her going.

She said, “When a client comes back in the next session and tells me that my intervention worked, and they are having better sexual health, sex-positive attitude, and intimate relationship, that gives me the motivation to continue this challenging yet rewarding profession. I have had so many supporters tell me that their life has been changed for the good and have credited my sessions, classes, and online content as the main reason. They have better relationships with their partner as well as themselves. They have learned to love their own body, be sex-positive, communicate well, shed sexual shame and guilt, and embrace their masculine and feminine side with confidence.”

HOW PALLAVI BARNWAL WORKS TO CREATE CHANGE?

Intimacy coach Pallavi Barnwal believed that young adults should not have to grow up in a sexual information void and have no one to turn to when they want to explore their sexual side. She believed that they should not be blaming themselves for having desires or putting themselves in harm’s way to hide the evidence of their sexual needs.

Pallavi also talked about sharing her personal journey on social media. She said, “I share stories of my insecurities, heartbreaks, and problems, and surprisingly, people seem to relate to me even more now. They like that I have chosen to be vulnerable with them. They don’t see an influencer with a large following or a strict educator who reads from a textbook. They see a fellow flawed human being who seems to understand and support them.”

It is our duty as a society to instil self-defence skills in young people. In order to provide the younger generation with a safer future, we must overcome taboos and recognize the value of sex education.

Liver Diseases: 9 Factors Why Liver Inflammation And Hepatitis Are Common in Women https://www.india.com/health/liver-diseases-9-factors-why-liver-inflammation-and-hepatitis-are-common-in-women-6215279/ Wed, 09 Aug 2023 02:42:13 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6215279 The liver removes toxins, modifies hormone levels, creates proteins, and produces bile, which aids in the absorption of fats, reserves sugar for times when you really need it, and helps you absorb fats. The liver is the only organ that has the ability to heal itself, however, certain illnesses can harm the organ irreparably or partially. Liver ailments are caused by many different things, but certain of them are more likely to affect women than males. Did you know that particular lifestyle choices and genetic factors increase this risk? Autoimmune-related hepatitis and liver inflammation may affect women more frequently. The following are some other reasons and risk factors that might impact more women.

WHY ARE WOMEN MORE AT RISK OF DEVELOPING LIVER DISEASES?

  1. Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD): Although women might be at a lower risk of developing NAFLD, they are definitely more susceptible to being affected by its severity or liver fibrosis after developing it. Factors like morbid obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and a lack of prioritisation of health contribute to this condition. NAFLD is one of the leading causes of liver disease in both males and females. It is most commonly found to be associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome.
  2. Autoimmune Hepatitis: This is a chronic condition in which our body’s immune system mistakenly attacks liver cells, leading to inflammation and liver damage. Autoimmune hepatitis is more common in females than males.
  3. Viral Hepatitis: Hepatitis viruses, including hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, can cause liver inflammation and disease. While viral hepatitis affects all genders, some studies suggest that women may be more susceptible to certain types, such as hepatitis E.
  4. Alcoholic Liver Disease: Excessive alcohol consumption potentially leads to liver damage, inflammation, and cirrhosis. Although alcohol-related liver disease is more common in males, women may be more susceptible to alcohol-related liver damage due to differences in alcohol metabolism and body composition.
  5. Drug-Induced Liver Injury: Certain medicines and toxins can cause liver damage. Women may be at higher risk due to hormonal misbalance. Some medications, such as oral contraceptive pills, can affect liver function significantly. Some alternative medicines are also known to cause acute liver failure.
  6. Pregnancy-Related Liver Disorders: Some liver conditions are specific to pregnancy, such as Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP) and HELLP syndrome (hemolysis, Elevated Liver Enzymes, and Low Platelet Count). These conditions can cause liver dysfunction and require medical attention.
  7. Wilson Disease: This rare genetic disorder affects copper metabolism and can lead to copper build-up in the liver and other organs. Wilson disease affects both genders but may present differently in females due to hormonal influences.
  8. Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC): PBC is also an autoimmune condition that primarily affects the bile ducts in the liver. It is more commonly seen in middle-aged women.
  9. Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC): PSC is a chronic liver disease characterised by inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts. It affects both genders, but men are more commonly affected.

Choose a healthy lifestyle, eat more fibre, add adequate protein to your diet, and manage your stress levels. As far as women’s health is concerned, more awareness needs to be spread in this regard, especially in rural and semi-urban areas of society.

Hailing from Satara, Aditi on Saturday became the youngest senior world champion at 17 when she secured India’s first-ever individual title at the World Archery Championships with compound women’s gold in Berlin. The class 12 student also became a double world champion in less than two months, having won the Under-18 title in Youth Championships in Limerick, Ireland on July 8.

I knew she is a champion in the making.” He further recalled that, “Aditi was really unimpressive, an emaciated 10-year-old when she came to the Stadium where I used to train. But her stubbornness caught my eyes and the journey began.”

Later in the day, Ojas Deotale also became the world champion when he bagged the compound men’s title with a sheer perfect score of 150 as India recorded their best-ever finish in the showpiece with four medals -three gold and one bronze.

7 Songs About Female Sexuality in Bollywood That Have Been Labelled ‘Vulgar’ https://www.india.com/women/7-songs-about-female-sexuality-in-bollywood-that-have-been-labelled-vulgar-6212827/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 09:06:37 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6212827 Subhash Ghai-directed movie ‘Khalnayak‘ completed 30-year anniversary on August 6, 2023. Recently, the filmmaker shared how astonished he was when the song ‘Choli Ke Peeche‘ was called vulgar. Subhash Ghai said “My closest memory of ‘Khalnayak‘ is when people labelled ‘Choli Ke Peeche‘ as vulgar. It was a tragedy for me… a major shock. We treated it as a folk song and presented it in an artistic way. But when the film was released, there were protests,” in an interview with PTI. The music for the song was written by renowned lyricist Anand Bakshi, created by the seasoned Laxmikant-Pyarelal team. Alka Yagnik sang the playback for Dixit, while Ila Arun sang the folk rendition that was used in Neena Gupta’s movie.

How many Hindi cinema songs represent women’s needs without objectifying or sexualizing them? These Bollywood songs treat women as mere sexual objects, serving only to seduce men and boost their self-esteem.

5 SEXIST BOLLYWOOD SONGS THAT HAVE BEEN LABELLED ‘VULGAR’

1. Mast Mast (Raveena Tandon in Mohra, Kiara Advani in Machine)

This song was included in the critically acclaimed musical drama Mohra from 1994. In addition to having a significant impact on the lives of roadside eve-teasers, this song also labelled Raveena Tandon, as a mast cheez. In 2017 Kiara Advani recreated the song again ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast for the Machine.

2. Apun Bola (SRK & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Josh)

In this song, Shah Rukh Khan is told by Aishwarya Rai’s character that he needn’t be concerned if he proposes to a girl and she rejects him. She has a certain style. Although she is saying, no she really means yes in her heart.

3. Desi Boyz (Akshay Kumar & John Abraham in Desi Boyz)

This song is from a movie about two male escorts named Rocco and Hunter who become escorts because of financial difficulties. They perform shirtless in classic Bollywood hero fashion, and during the song, they are surrounded by several ladies who swoon over them.

4. Fevicol Se (Kareena Kapoor & Salman Khan in Dabangg)

This song appeared at a point when we were finally discussing the objectification of women in Bollywood and informed us that we are truly ‘tandoori murgis,’ here for consumption. Although the song went on to win accolades, the harm had already been done in my heart.

5. Tu Mere Agal Bagal Hai (Shahid Kapoor & Illena Dçruz)

He threatens to stalk and obstruct the object of his adoration because he feels an unreasonable sense of entitlement. This, according to him, is the genuine sign of a lover. He also begs her not to be surprised or object while he is doing all of this.

6. Aare Pritam Pyare (Rowdy Rathore)

Aare Pritam Pyare was filmed at a gathering of Bihar’s local political leaders and police officers. The sexual pleasures associated with seeing a woman’s breast are implied in the lyrics fairly directly.

7. Sheila Ki Jawani (Tees Maar Khan)

Sheila, the protagonist is practically vulnerable in the song. She is surrounded by loud guys who loudly gawk at her in these item songs.

These songs were created in such a way as to appeal to the fantasies of a particular group of males. They employ disparaging and objectifying phrases like ‘cheez,’ ‘maal,’ and so forth. They also make references to women as delectable foodstuffs, which makes males physically drool like ravenous dogs.

What Is Situationship And Why Is Gen Z So Obsessed With It? https://www.india.com/women/what-is-situationship-and-why-is-gen-z-so-obsessed-with-it-6213728/ Tue, 08 Aug 2023 08:38:25 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6213728 Do you currently have a romantic connection that isn’t quite a dating one? You and your partner like spending time together and could even be intimate, but you haven’t made a commitment to one another or talked about the future. When someone asks you if you’re seeing someone, you never quite know what to answer, and the only acceptable response is it’s complicated. A romantic relationship without definite boundaries or commitment is called a situationship. Relationship expert Dr Chandni Tugnait said, “Embracing a situationship is absolutely valid as long as you’re anchored by a strong sense of self-awareness and clear boundaries. In the unpredictable journey of modern relationships, it’s okay to navigate the grey areas and explore connections without the constraints of traditional labels.”

WHAT IS SITUATIONSHIP?

Situationship is defined by emotional closeness, and spending time together, and frequently includes a sexual and or physical element. However, partners refuse to categorize, define, or establish clear limits for their relationship. A situational relationship may give rise to apprehension, worry, and bewilderment concerning the future of the union.

WHY IS GEN Z OBSESSED WITH SITUATIONSHIP?

A situationship is an uncommitted, sporadic relationship. If that’s what you’re searching for right now, it can allow you to profit from a connection without having to waste a lot of emotional energy. The fact that there is less accountability is a situationship’s main benefit. Relationships have the potential to drain a lot of emotional resources.

  1. You prefer emotional independence
  2. You’re focusing more on self-discovery
  3. You’re looking for shared interests
  4. Emotional maturity is your priority
  5. Limited time commitment works for you

HOW COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO SITUATIONSHIP?

Dr Chandni added, “Remember, your worth isn’t defined by relationship status, but rather by the respect you have for yourself and the limits you set. Being in a situationship allows you to experience the beauty of human connections without the pressure of rigid commitments, however, it’s essential to communicate openly, honestly, and authentically with the one you’re involved with.”

The individual who wants more may start to confuse their feeling of self-worth with winning the other person’s favour, which can have a significant negative influence on their mental health. Remember that even if both parties initially accept the characteristics of the relationship, one partner may later come to expect more from it than the other is prepared to deliver.

If there are no talks about what the partners want or need from the relationship, people may choose to enter one or may find themselves in one.

India Sees More Women Representation In Board Rooms But Growth Is Slow https://www.india.com/business/india-sees-more-women-representation-in-board-rooms-but-growth-is-slow-6210829/ Mon, 07 Aug 2023 04:01:00 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6210829 New Delhi: The representation of women on the boards of listed companies in the country has seen a steady rise in the last few years, according to government data. There has been a push to increase gender diversity on the boards through various stakeholders in the companies across the country over the years but the growth has been slow.

Slow Growth Of Women Representation In Corporate Boardrooms In India

Around 3,232 listed companies in India had 4,741 women directors on the board at the end of FY23, as per the data from the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs, according to a report by Mint. By the end of FY21, listed companies had 4,187 women directors while 4,054 women directors were there till FY20. By the end of financial year 2020, there were 3,941 women directors on the listed companies.

We are still behind in bridging the vast gap of gender diversity in the corporate boardrooms as there are 35 listed companies in the country that have no women directors on their boards, according to the official data.

However, there are 33 listed companies that have the majority of women in their boardrooms. Around 30 per cent of women account for directorship roles in 618 listed companies.

Earlier, a report released by EY showed India increasing women representation on boards from six per cent in 2013 to 18 per cent in 2022. “18 per cent female representation on Indian boards is essentially a result of the Indian corporate law mandate,” the report stated.

According to the report, nearly 95 per cent of the NIFTY 500 companies now have a woman on the board of directors. However, less than five per cent of companies have female chairpersons, so there is still room for improvement.

Sectors Push For Board Diversity

  • At 24 per cent, the Lifesciences sector leads with the highest percentage of women on boards. As per the EY report, a sizable number of women promoters is one of the Key factors contributing to the high gender diversity on Lifesciences boards, both in executive and non-executive positions.
  • Media and Entertainment is Another sector where women’s representation on boards has increased significantly, from 14 per cent in 2017 to 23 per cent in 2022. However, the increase is not uniform across companies. According to the EY report, the increase is mainly due to a few organizations exceeding the mandated quota and hiring more women directors.
  • Closely followed by the Media and Entertainment sector is the Consumer Products and Retail sector. From 1,29 in 2017 to 1,79 women on the boards of each organization in 2022, the sector has registered a noticeable increase.

Menstrual Cramps And Diet: 5 Foods to Eat And Avoid During During Period Pain https://www.india.com/health/menstrual-cramps-and-diet-5-foods-to-eat-and-avoid-during-during-period-pain-6209160/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 05:46:26 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6209160 Menstrual Cramps And Diet: Many biological and mental factors affect women, and although some have the benefits of regular periods, others struggle with irregular cycles. When this happens, your process may be strongly impacted by the foods you consume to support and fuel these changes in your body. Fatigue, bloating, mood fluctuations, cramps, and discomfort are prevalent during the menstrual cycle. It can cause numerous bodily aches and pains in addition to an irritable attitude and decreased productivity at work. However, maintaining a balanced diet while on your period might help you manage period pain. Obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Divya Vora shares a list of some things to eat and steer clear of while experiencing irregular menstrual cycles. Maintaining a balanced diet while on your period might help you manage period pain.

FOODS TO EAT AND AVOID DURING YOUR MENSTRUAL CYCLE

  1. Leafy Greens in, Processed Foods Out: Get as many leafy greens as possible to replenish your iron levels with options like spinach and kale. Vegetables that give you fibre like Broccoli are also good food choices. Peas, lentils, and Brussels sprouts are also greens that can be included in a ‘green meal.’
  2. Green Tea in, Caffeine & Alcohol Out: Caffeinated beverages and alcohol should be avoided and green tea and juices should be consumed instead. Coffee would increase your blood pressure and the higher heart rate would adversely impact anxiety that you may have then. Alcohol may be a tempting relief from the pain, but while tempting it is also temporary. On the contrary, the anti-oxidants in green tea work on relaxing the muscles and alleviating the pain.
  3. Bananas in, Processes & Fatty Foods Out: Processed and Fatty Foods are the most tempting during this time but also do not aid you in any way during your period (or any other time for that matter!) but fruits like Banana is a potassium-rich and yummy alternative with an added benefit to reducing bloating. Additionally, if you face bowel movement issues while menstruating, bananas aid with that. As processed foods have preservatives, they interfere with your hormones that end up making you even more uncomfortable. Fatty food not only aggravates your skin (which is already impacted by hormonal changes) but also directly impacts your hormones.
  4. Yogurt & Lassi in, Dairy Out: Avoid Dairy with certain exceptions such as the probiotic-rich yogurt (with less sugar) which is good for gut health and is useful for PMS with its calcium content. A diluted lassi (watered down) and coconut water also can serve as acceptable alternatives during this period. As ice cream is fatty and again attractive – we cannot ignore that it is also dairy and hence the high levels of arachidonic acid in dairy can trigger your cramping. Cheese also does the same to your body.
  5. Salmon, Avocados, Walnuts, & Dark Chocolate in, Fried, Salt, & Refined Grains Out: The last and one of the key categories to be wary of are refined grains, high salt, and fried foods. From a gastrointestinal perspective – they lead to bloating, constipation, and water retention which are sensitive during menstruation anyway. Fried food tends to increase estrogen levels and impact your mood swings. Thus, to deal with hunger pangs and cravings opt for options like salmon, avocados, walnuts and dark chocolate. The lean protein in salmon with Omega-3 fatty acids relaxes muscles and pains, the chocolate releases serotonin for your mood, and the cocoa anti-oxidants work on relaxing your muscles.

Long-term relief can be achieved by being aware of the little triggers that affect your hormones and the exact symptoms you are experiencing.

Do You Love Wearing Cat-Eye Glasses? You Should Know The Story of Altina Schinasi And How She Ended up Making Them https://www.india.com/women/story-of-altina-schinasi-and-how-she-ended-up-making-cat-eye-glasses-harlequin-frames-altina-schinasi-birthday-google-doodle-6205541/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 06:44:43 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6205541 Cat-eye or round, what should be the shape of the glasses is an important choice to make and people wearing spectacles will relate. It is a whole process to have that one right shape that suits the face and also should look trendy. Thanks to Altina Schinasi, we all have that one cat-eye glasses that never go out of style. Marking the 116th birth anniversary of the American artist and the inventor is most known for designing the Harlequin eyeglass frame — known today as the widely popular “cat-eye” eyeglass frame.

WHO IS ALTANI SCHINASI, THE WOMAN BEHIND CAT-EYE GLASSES?

Schinasi was born on this day in 1907 in Manhattan, New York to immigrant parents. Her mother was a native of Salonica (then in the Ottoman Empire) and her father was a Sephardic Jewish Turk. After graduating high school, Schinasi studied painting in Paris, which sparked her appreciation for the arts. Once back in the US, she studied art at The Art Students League in New York and took a position as a window dresser for multiple stores on Fifth Avenue. During this time, she found herself working with and learning from prominent artists she admired such as Salvador Dalí and George Grosz.

Already an established and successful artist, Schinasi also ventured into the world of film. In 1960, she produced a documentary about the celebrated artist and her former teacher George Grosz titled George Grosz’ Interregnum. It was nominated for an Academy Award and won first place at the Venice Film Festival.

In her later years, Schinasi did not slow down. She wrote and published her memoir The Road I Have Traveled (1995), volunteered as an art therapist, and even invented unique portrait chairs and benches which she called Chairacters.

THE STORY THAT LEADS TO THE CREATION OF CAT-EYE GLASSES

It is only today that there are myriad of options to choose from when it comes to spectacle frames. Back in the 90s, there were pretty limited choices. That’s when it hit Schinasi that it is even more limited for women. At the window display of a nearby optician’s office, she noticed that the only option for women’s glasses tended to be round frames with mundane designs.

Thinking as to why not women have the liberty to explore more trendy frame designs, Schinasi took inspiration from a carnival! Yes, once she saw people in Venice wearing Harlequin masks during a Carnevale festival. Those pointed edges flattering to the face fascinated her eye and mimicked the design. But that was not it.

During that era, such ideas were not taken seriously. So, when the artist approached different manufacturers, they all closed doors and rejected the idea saying it was too “edgy.” Not giving up,  she struck luck when a local shop owner believed in her vision and asked for an exclusive design for six months. To their delight, the Harlequin glasses quickly became a success, earning Schansi much publicity. By the late 1930s and through the 1940s, Harlequin glasses became an overwhelming fashion accessory among women in the US. Schinasi was awarded the Lord & Taylor American Design Award in 1939 for her invention, and was recognized by major magazines including Vogue and Life.

All thanks to Schinasi and her resilience that we the trend  that never goes out of fashion!

Breastfeeding Week 2023: Do New Moms Feel Pain While Feeding Their Newborns? 7 Myths Debunked https://www.india.com/health/breastfeeding-week-2023-do-new-moms-feel-pain-while-feeding-their-newborns-7-myths-debunked-6205162/ Fri, 04 Aug 2023 04:32:22 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6205162 Pregnancy to welcome the baby in the world and the journey thereafter, is nothing short of a roller coaster ride. While there is so much a woman, a mother experiences in her motherhood, however, essential maternity privileges are still not widely available. According to a report by World Health Organisation (WHO), Just 20% of countries require employers to provide employees with paid breaks and facilities for breastfeeding or expressing milk.

In order to spread more awareness about breastfeeding, every year August 1 to August 7 is celebrated as breastfeeding week. New mothers, new parents have several doubts about parenting, because there is no rule to it. There are several myths surrounding breastfeeding as well. Do nipples get sore? Is breastfeeding easy? Here are some of these myths that you should stop believing right away! The widely prevalent myths surrounding it are an important contributor to the confusion that families face while breastfeeding. We got in touch with Dr. Shacchee Baweja, Sr. Consultant (IBCLC),BLK-Max Centre For Child Health, to better comprehend the notions around breastfeeding.

BREASTFEEDING MYTHS AND FACTS

Myth 1: Breastfeeding is easy and natural.

Fact: Breastfeeding like walking is a learned act. While it is natural, it doesn’t always come easily for every mother and baby. It can take time and practice for both to establish a comfortable feeding routine.

Myth 2: Its not possible to feed on day 1 after a C Section.

Fact: It is possible to feed the moment baby is born, irrespective of the type of birth. All you need is a skilled lactation support person who can help baby latch on to the breast and who can also teach the husband / other family member how to do it. Most of the medications used during csec are also compatible with breastfeeding.

Myth 3: A mother needs to clean her nipples before breastfeeding.
The nipple area has natural protective oils to keep it germ free. When we try to clean it, there is more chance of introducing germs.

Myth 4 There is no milk on day 1

Milk production starts around 16th -20 th week of pregnancy.
Breasts feel soft on day 1 because there is colostrum(early sticky thick milk) which is needed in small amounts by the baby.
One cannot check the amount of milk in breasts by squeezing them .

Myth 5: Some amount of pain is normal while Breastfeeding .

Fact: Breastfeeding shouldn’t be painful. While some discomfort may occur during the initial days as you and your baby adjust, ongoing pain could indicate an improper latch or other issues related to the infant and should be addressed with a skilled and experienced professional.

Myth 6: Breast pumps are harmful and should not be used.

Fact: Breast pumps if used correctly are very helpful in certain situations. If due to any reason a baby is not feeding or feeding well from the mother (ex separation, prematurity, oral restrictions, joining back work etc), mother can use a breast pump to regularly extract milk and provide for her baby.

Myth 7: Blocked ducts are due to thickened milk blocking the milk ducts.

Facts: Ducts get blocked because of injury and swelling(inflammation) inside the ducts, which in turn is caused by suboptimal latching. So the best way to manage them is working on the latch and measures to decrease the inflammation (as opposed to the older recommendations of trying to vigorously drain the breast).

Who is Lizzo, American Rapper Accused of Sexual Harassment And Fat Shaming Former Tour Dancers? https://www.india.com/women/who-is-lizzo-american-rapper-accused-of-sexual-harassment-and-fat-shaming-former-tour-dancers-6203232/ Thu, 03 Aug 2023 05:31:08 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6203232 American rapper Lizzo, her production business Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., and the leader of her dance troupe Shirlene Quigley were named in the complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, according to court records. Three former dancers from Lizzo’s team filed a civil case against her on Tuesday in Los Angeles County Superior Court, saying she harassed them sexually and fostered a hostile work environment. People who have long praised the 35-year-old singer for her dedication to body acceptance are particularly shocked by the revelation.

WHO IS LIZZO, AMERICAN RAPPER ACCUSED OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND FAT SHAMING

Lizzo is a stage name for Melissa Viviane Jefferson, an American rapper, singer, songwriter, actor, and musician. Lizzo received a Grammy for Record of the Year for her smash song ‘About Damn Time,’ earlier this year. Her fourth studio album, ‘Special,’ was recently the subject of a successful globe tour.

Lizzo also performs in films, along with singing and rapping. She provided the voice of one of the characters in the animated movie Ugly Dolls in 2019 and appeared in the criminal comedy-drama Hustlers. In recognition of her rapid ascent and contributions to music, Time honoured Lizzo Entertainer of the Year in 2019. She has won two Soul Train Music Awards, a Billboard Music Award, and a BET Award, in addition to her three Grammy Awards.

WHY ARE LIZZO’S DANCERS SUING HER?

The incident allegedly occurred following Lizzo’s performance in Amsterdam, when she and her crew had gone to a gig in the city’s Red Light District. Lizzo is accused of pressuring the dancers to touch naked performers, which put the plaintiffs in awkward positions. According to the court document, Lizzo ignored the physical autonomy of her employees in front of a large number of her coworkers. Plaintiffs Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez have complained of harassment on the basis of sex, colour, religion, and disabilities.

Arianna Davis, one of the plaintiffs, alleged that she was forced to take part in a picture session despite feeling uncomfortable because she feared losing her job if she didn’t. Lizzo is also charged with body-shaming Davis for gaining weight and terminating her in May after she taped a meeting in which Lizzo offered the dancers feedback on their performances.

The captain of the dance team, Shirlene Quigley, has been charged with imposing her religious views on the dancers. She was accused of calling Davis a ‘non-believer’ and discussing private information about her without permission, according to the lawsuit. Davis apparently did this by bringing up her virginity in discussions, interviews, and online.

The suit also stated that Ms Davis was pressured to participate in a nude photo shoot to stay in a dance competition despite her discomfort. She claimed she feared losing her job if she didn’t comply with Lizzo’s requests.

The dancers also claimed that Lizzo, a well-known proponent of body positivity and self-love, had reprimanded one dancer for gaining weight recently before berating, then dismissing, that dancer for filming a meeting.

WHY DID BEYONCE SKIP LIZZO’s NAME FROM HER LIVE PERFORMANCE?

Beyoncé stunned her audience on her Renaissance World Tour when she left Lizzo’s name out of her live performance, leading many to wonder why she made that choice. Others speculate that it may be in retribution for Erykah Badu’s claimed style of snubbing. Some think it might be connected to a recent harassment complaint against Lizzo.

The music industry and Lizzo’s fans are watching the case closely to see how it develops and affects the singer’s career as a proponent of body positivity.

Pregnancy Diet: 5 Most Essential Nutrients For Expecting Mothers https://www.india.com/lifestyle/pregnancy-diet-5-most-essential-nutrients-for-expecting-mothers-6192105/ Fri, 28 Jul 2023 03:11:12 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6192105 Pregnancy Diet: As your pregnancy advances, your body will be under more stress, which may be managed with a good diet. The objective is to strike a balance between eating enough nutrients to promote the development of your fetus and keeping a healthy weight. The importance of nutrition throughout pregnancy cannot be overstated.  Get enough fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats when pregnant. These are the fundamentals of a good diet. However, some elements in a pregnant woman’s diet need extra care.

Award-winning nutritionist Lovneet Batra says, “During pregnancy, several essential nutrients are crucial for the health and development of both the mother and the baby.” The health expert further shares a few essential nutrients for women during pregnancy.

5 ESSENTIAL NUTRIENTS DURING PREGNANCY

  1. Folic Acid: It is required for foetal brain and spine development. When it comes to conception and the early weeks of pregnancy, no nutrient is more vital than Folic Acid. Sources: Spinach, beetroot, broccoli, and citrus foods
  2. Calcium: It is essential for the development of the baby’s bones, teeth, and muscles. It also supports the mother’s bone health. Most importantly, your baby needs calcium to maintain a normal heartbeat. Other body functions like hormone secretion, muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and blood clotting also depend on calcium intake. Sources: Milk, green leafy vegetables, oranges, nuts, figs, and apricots.
  3. Iron: It is critical for oxygen transport, healthy growth and the development of the foetus and placenta. Did you know?
