Mussoorie with its green hills, varied flora and fauna and a view of the Himalayas, is one of Uttarakhand’s most popular hill stations. Often called the Queen of the Hills, it is located 34 km from Dehradun. It was founded in 1820 when one Captain Young from the British army was so taken in by the beauty of this place that he made it his home. The Kempty Falls, the Lal Tibba, the Jawahar Aquarium, the Bhatta Falls among others are most popular among tourists. Mussoorie gets its name from the Mussoorie plant that grows in abundance here. The Shedup Choepelling Temple located on the Happy Valley road in Mussoorie was the Dalai Lama’s first place of refuge when he fled Tibet. While the route to the temple is quite narrow and lacking in sign boards, most of the locals will be happy to help you make your way to it. Swamped between the months of May and July, the price of accommodation and food drops drastically through the rest of the year.
