Place Details:
The Konark Sun Temple is located along the coastline of Odisha, about three km from the sea, and is heavily decorated with stone carving. The entire temple complex takes the form of the Sun God’s towering chariot drawn by seven horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels at its base.
The entire temple complex is covered with exquisite sculptures similar to the temples of Khajuraho. At the entrance of the temple is the Natamandir, where the temple dancers used to perform dances in homage to the Sun God. The dance festival is held on the same platform.
The Konark Sun Temple is a 13th century Sun Temple constructed from oxidized and weathered ferruginous sandstone. The temple is an example of Orissan architecture of the Ganga dynasty. The temple is one of the most renowned temples in India and is a World Heritage Site.
