Known as the Gateway to Kumaon, Haldwani in Uttarakhand is known for its scenic views and pleasant climate. Haldwani stands for the forests of Haldu trees as the region once had an abundance of Haldu trees (also known as Kadamb). Located in Nainital district, the town is surrounded by dense forests and the Gaula River. It has rich culture and history which attracts ecologists and historians.
The Haidakhan Ashram, about 35 km east of Haldwani is a popular pilgrimage site. Strategically located between the hilly terrain of the Kumaon regions and the Indo-Gangetic plain, the town has served as a trading post. It is one of the largest food and vegetable production centers in north India.

It is said that thus town was gifted to a local ruler, Gyan Chand in the 14th century as a grant from the Sultan. However, the Mughals were unsuccessful in regaining control of the region due to the rugged terrain. CHECK OUT
