Kovalam in Kerala has come a long way from being a sleepy fishing village to being one of the best surfing destinations in India. Kovalam assumed importance when Maharani Sethu Laskhmi Bai, the Queen of Travancore, built a palace, the Halcyon Castle, on the top rock near the beach. In 1936, the then queen chose to spend her honeymoon with consort Prince GV Raja. It was GV Raja who saw the tourist potential of Kovalam and invited Thomas Cook and Sons from the United Kingdom to develop the region. The Maharaja of Travancore started having regular gatherings here and Halcyon Castle would house his European guests.
The popularity of the region grew and it became one of the favorite holiday destinations for European guests who lived in Madras and other nearby regions.
Post Independence, Kovalam was relatively unknown but it came to the limelight in the seventies when hippies arrived here and transformed the village into a tourist destination with their wild parties. The Kovalam Beach and the Vizhinjam Marine Aquarium are places you must visit. Also visit Poovar, a hamlet 17 km southeast of Kovalam.
