Best known for the Maheshwari saris, introduced by its most famous ruler, Ahilya Bai Holkar some 250 years ago, Maheshwar is a small town situated on the banks of river Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. There aren’t a lot of ‘touristy’ things to do here with the Ghat and the Ahilya Fort pretty much rounding off the list.
The daily goings-on at the Ghat are reminiscent in some ways of life in Varanasi. Make sure you wake up before sunset to watch life along Narmada and swing by here when the sun is about to set to see things wind down in this little town. Ahilya’s personal quarters are open to public but a part of Ahilya Fort has been converted into a heritage hotel.
