Known for its pristine beach, Malpe is a prominent fishing harbor on the Karnataka coast about six km from the temple town of Udupi, at the mouth of the Udyavara river. The temple dedicated to Vadabhandeshwara is another tourist attraction in Malpe. Located near Malpe port, it is also known as the temple of Anantheshwara and Lord Balrama (brother of Lord Krishna) is its presiding deity. It is believed that the idol was installed by philosopher-saint Sri Madhavacharya.
Surrounded by four rocky islands — Daria Bahadurgad, St. Mary’s Island, Kari-Illada-Kallu and Daria-Gadara-Kalluthe, tourists are more attracted to St. Mary’s and Daria Bahadurgad islands. It is believed that the fort on Daria Bahadurgad was built us by Basavappa Naik of Bidanur. Fishing is the prime source of income for the locals though some are involved with the coconut industry as well. Known for its seafood, the hotels near the beach serve the best variety.
The Spring Zouk festival showcasing some amazing DJ’s, art, cuisine and culture is another major attraction for tourists.

Even though some of the best hotels and resorts are ones that are closest to the beach, there are several near the bus stand and the Krishna temple too.

While seafood is predominant in the town, vegetarians need not worry. You can find many multi-cuisine restaurants serving Indian and international cuisine.
