Guneet Amarpreet Kaur Monga is an Indian movie producer who works predominantly in the Hindi film industry. She made her debut as a producer in the 2007 movie Say Salaam India which was based on cricket. She is also an Academy Award winner and a BAFTA nominee.
The start of her journey as a producer was no way easy, but Guneet managed to overcome every obstacle and earned praise from The Hollywood Reporter for being one of the top 12 women achievers in the global entertainment industry. In 2008 she started her own production company, Sikhya Entertainment.
2007 TO 2010:
Guneet's first production Say Salaam India in 2007 failed to take off, but undeterred, she went on to work as an executive producer in the 2008 movie Rang Rasiya, and as a producer for the movie Dasvidaniya in the same year. Her first major international film was Kavi in 2009, a short film about bonded labour in India, which earned her a nomination at the 2010 Academy Awards for Best Live Action Short Film. In 2010 she was supervising producer for the movie Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai.
2011 TO 2012:
Guneet became the producer for the 2011 movie That Girl In Yellow Boots after director Anurag Kashyap approached her to produce it. She was also offered a position as CEO of AKFPL (Anurag Kashyap Film Productions Ltd.). The same year she worked on three other films, namely, Shaitan, Trishna (British-Swedish-Indian drama film), and Michael. In 2012 she worked in Peddlers, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 2, and Aiyyaa.
2013 TO 2018:
In 2013, Guneet worked in the movies Shahid, The Lunchbox, Monsoon Shootout, and Mickey Virus, the following year she was a co-producer for the movie Tigers (initially titled White Lies). In 2015, she worked in the movies Vakratunda Mahakaaya and Masaan, and then in Zubaan (2016), Haraamkhor (2017), and in Period. End of Sentence. (2018). The latter won an Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject) at the 91st Academy Awards.
OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS:
Guneet was touted as being one of fifty women from the entertainment industry doing "extraordinary things on the worldwide stage" by the American film magazine Variety. When it published its first International Women's Impact Report in March 2018, Guneet was one of only two women from India in it with the other being actress Deepika Padukone.
In 2018, Guneet became one of the first Indian producers to join the Producer branch of Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
PERSONAL LIFE:
Guneet Monga was born on November 21, 1983 in New Delhi, India and she completed her schooling from Bluebells International School and then graduated from the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University with a degree in Mass Communication. After doing a number of odd jobs, she came to the conclusion that she wanted to make movies and go to Mumbai, but she did not have the money for it. Help came in the form of her neighbour in Delhi, who offered to invest Rs 50 lakh in her film project. Taking the loan, she headed to Mumbai.
