The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad also known as IIM-A is a public business school. It is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. IIM Ahmedabad was the second Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established. The first IIM to be established in India is IIM Calcutta. It is ranked as one of the leading business schools in India and the Asia-Pacific region. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was established in the year 1961 on December 11. IIM Ahmedabad offers Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in Management, Post Graduate Diploma Programmes in Agri-Business Management, a Fellowship Programme and many Executive Training Programmes. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad is referred to as the Well-known Institute of Management in Western India (WIMWI). IIMs were established after witnessing the growing need for educating professionals who could powerfully manage the growing industries in India. There was an objective behind establishing the IIMs which aims at providing both education and assistance to the industries through consulting services as well as research. IIM Ahmedabad was established with the active support of the Government of Gujarat, Government of India, and the industry. Vikram Sarabhai (Physicist) and Kasturbhai Lalbhai (Business) played essential roles in setting up the Institute. Ravi J. Matthai (Management educator) and many other industrialists based out of Ahmedabad played a major role in its creation. The main building of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was designed by Louis Kahn, an American architect. The New Campus of IIM Ahmedabad which is an extension along with the underpass connecting the two campuses was designed by Bimal Patel. The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad offers diplomas in management. Various programmes offered by the Institute are; Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) which is a two year, full-time MBA programme, Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agribusiness Management (PGP-FABM) which is a two year, full-time MBA programme and One Year Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) which is a One Year full-time MBA programme for experienced professionals. In addition to that, the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad also offers; Faculty Development Programme (FDP) and Armed Forces Programme (AFP). IIM Ahmedabad also runs a doctoral programme namely, Fellow Programme in Management (FPM). The first Director of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad was the Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai. Ashish Nanda who was hired as the Director of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in the year 2016 by AM Naik, chairman of Larsen and Toubro and also the chairman of the board of IIM Ahmedabad. Ashish Nanda had previously taught at Harvard Business School. He taught for 13 years at Harvard Business School before moving to Harvard Law School to design.
