Kangana Ranaut is an Indian actress and director who works predominantly in the Hindi film industry. She made her acting debut in 2006 with movie Gangster alongside Emraan Hashmi and Shiney Ahuja. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut for the movie.
In 2006, Kangana starred in Woh Lamhe, a movie supposedly based on the life of late veteran actress Parveen Babi, her battle with schizophrenia, and her relationship with Mahesh Bhatt. The movie was critically acclaimed for its screenplay, direction, and a noteworthy performance by Kangana.
2007 TO 2013:
Kangana has starred in over 30 movies, namely, Shakalaka Boom Boom (2007), Life in a... Metro (2007), Dhaam Dhoom (Tamil-2008), Fashion (2008), Raaz: The Mystery Continues (2009), Vaada Raha (Special Appearance-2009), Ek Niranjan (Telegu-2009), Kites (2010), Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), Knock Out (2010), No Problem (2010), Tanu Weds Manu (2011), Game (2011), Ready (Special Appearance-2011), Double Dhamaal (2011), Rascals (2011), Miley Naa Miley Hum (2011), Tezz (2012), Shootout at Wadala (2013), Krrish 3 (2013), and Rajjo (2013).
2014 TO 2020:
In 2014, Kangana starred in three movies, namely, Queen, Revolver Rani and Ungli. She also wrote the dialogue for Queen. She followed the three with Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), I Love NY (2015), Katti Batti (2015), Rangoon (2017-Nominated Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress), Simran (2017-Actor/Writer), Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019-Actor/Director), and Judgementall Hai Kya (2019). In 2020 she stars in sports drama Panga alongside Jassi Gill, Richa Chadha, and Neena Gupta.
PERSONAL LIFE:
Kangana Ranaut was born on March 23, 1987 at Bhambla (now Surajpur) in Himachal Pradesh to Amardeep Ranaut and Asha Ranaut, and she has an elder sister, who works as her manager, and a younger brother. She was educated at the DAV School in Chandigarh with science as her main subject as her parents had insisted she become a doctor. She ended up leaving home at the age of 16 to find her space and freedom, and arrived in Delhi.
EARLY CAREER:
In Delhi, Kangana was unable to decide which career to choose and took on some modelling assignments after she got an offer from the Elite Modelling Agency. Not liking the job, she shifted focus towards acting and joined the Asmita Theatre Group, where she trained under the theatre director Arvind Gaur. When she got a positive response from the audience during a theatre performance, she decided to relocate to Mumbai for a career in movies. In Mumbai, she enrolled herself at the Asha Chandra's drama school.
CONTROVERSIES:
Known to speak her mind publicly, Kangana landed in a number of controversies, most involving her personal and professional relationships.
AWARDS:
Kangana won a number of awards for her role in movies Gangster, Life in a... Metro, Fashion, Queen, and Tanu Weds Manu Returns. The awards include a Filmfare Award, a National Film Award, and International Indian Film Academy Awards.
