Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is an Indian actress who works predominantly in the Hindi film industry. She made her debut in 2007 with movie Saawariya alongside Ranbir Kapoor, and the film earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut nomination. She did win a Stardust Award for Superstar of Tomorrow – Female for it.
Sonam had begun her film career as an assistant director in director Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2005 movie Black, which had starred Rani Mukerji and Amitabh Bachchan. The movie had been a huge box office hit in India and abroad.
2009 TO 2014:
After her first movie Saawariya failed to perform, Sonam in 2009, went on to star in Delhi-6 alongside Abhishek Bachchan and a host of other stars. The movie got mixed reviews upon its release. She finally gained commercial success in 2010 with the movie I Hate Luv Storys, starring opposite Imran Khan, and it earned her a Stardust Award - Best Actress in a Comedy or Romance nomination. The same year she starred in romantic comedy Aisha alongside Abhay Deol, and it had moderate success at the box office.
In 2011, Sonam featured alongside a host of other stars in Anees Bazmee's movie Thank You, which was a commercial success but had opened to negative reviews from critics. The same year she starred in Mausam opposite Shahid Kapoor, but the movie failed to perform at the box office. She then starred in Players in 2012 alongside well-known actors, but the movie failed to take off at the box office.
From 2013 onwards, Sonam featured in 13 movies, namely, Bombay Talkies (Special Appearance in Song Apna Bombay Talkies-2013), Raanjhanaa (Box Office Hit-2013), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), Bewakoofiyaan (2014), Khoobsurat (Box Office Hit-2014), Dolly Ki Doli (2015), Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (Box Office Hit-2015), Neerja (Huge Box Office Hit-2016), Pad Man (Huge Box Office Hit-2018), Veere Di Wedding (Huge Box Office Hit-2018), Sanju (Huge Box Office Hit-2018), Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019), and The Zoya Factor (2019).
Apart from movies, she has also appeared in two music videos, Dheere Dheere by Honey Singh in 2015, and Hymn for the Weekend by Coldplay in 2016.
PERSONAL LIFE:
Sonam Kapoor was born on June 9, 1985 in Chembur of Bombay (now Mumbai) to Anil Kapoor, who is an actor and producer, and to Sunita, a former model and designer. She has two younger siblings, a sister and a brother. She studied at the Arya Vidya Mandir school in Juhu, and trained in Kathak, classical music and Latin dance. She enrolled at United World College of South East Asia in Singapore for her pre-university education, where she studied theatre and arts and revealed that she later started courses in economics and political science through the University of Mumbai correspondence programme. She is married to the businessman Anand Ahuja.
OTHERS:
Sonam is an ardent supporter of LGBT rights, PETA, and has worked with organisations to raise awareness about breast cancer. She has also been credited as being one of India's most fashionable celebrities.
