Vicky Kaushal is an Indian actor who works in the Hindi film industry. He began his career in cinema by working as an assistant director in the 2012 film Gangs of Wasseypur which was produced and directed by Anurag Kashyap. The movie featured an ensemble cast, with Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi, Richa Chadda and Tigmanshu Dhulia playing major roles.
The same year, Vicky was given a minor role in Hindi comedy Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. The movie got positive reviews and did well at the box office. In 2013, he acted in short film Geek Out, and then in 2015 he had a minor role in Bombay Velvet. The movie starred Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar in lead roles and failed to perform at the box office.
Vicky got his first lead role in 2015 in Hindi drama Masaan, which got positive reviews and earned him the IIFA and Screen Awards for Best Male Debut. The same year he starred in Zubaan alongside actress Sarah Jane Dias. In 2016, he starred in psychological thriller Raman Raghav 2.0 alongside actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Sobhita Dhulipala. The movie received mostly positive reviews and did okay at the box office.
BREAKTHROUGH:
The year 2018 was a very busy time for Vicky as he acted in five movies. The first was Love Per Square Foot opposite actress Angira Dhar and the movie got positive reviews. The second was Raazi, an adaptation of Harinder Sikka's 2008 novel Calling Sehmat. It featured Alia Bhatt and was one of the highest-grossing Indian films featuring a female protagonist.
He was next seen in Lust Stories, an Indian anthology film consisting of four short film segments directed by Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar, Dibakar Banerjee, and Karan Johar. It was nominated for International Emmy Award for Best TV Movie or Miniseries. His next venture was Sanju, a biographical film that follows the life of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt. Vicky won Best Supporting Actor award at the 64th Filmfare Awards, International Indian Film Academy Awards, Zee Cine Awards and Best Supporting Performance at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.
Vicky then starred in Manmarziyaan alongside actors Abhishek Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu. The movie received positive reviews and did good business at the box office.
In 2019, Vicky starred in military action movie Uri: The Surgical Strike alongside Paresh Rawal, Mohit Raina and Yami Gautam. The movie, which is a dramatised account of the retaliation to the 2016 Uri attack, got mixed reviews but performed well at the box office. It became the second highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2019.
UPCOMING:
Vicky has a number of movies set up for 2020, Bhoot – Part One: The Haunted Ship, in which he will star opposite actress Bhumi Pednekar, and Sardar Udham Singh, which is a biographical film directed by Shoojit Sircar. He will also star as Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Takht, and act in a biopic on army officer Sam Manekshaw.
PERSONAL LIFE:
Vicky Kaushal was born on May 16, 1988 in a chawl in suburban Mumbai to Sham Kaushal, a stuntman and subsequent action director in Hindi films. His younger brother, Sunny, is also an actor. Vicky pursued an engineering degree in electronics and telecommunications from Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Technology in Mumbai but realised he was not suited for an office job. Aspiring to develop a career in films, he studied acting at Kishore Namit Kapoor's academy.
