XLRI - Xavier School of Management is one of the top management schools of the country based in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. It was founded by the Society of Jesus (Jesuit). The school was initially set up by Fr. Quinn Enright, S.J. in the Steel City of Jamshedpur in 1949 as the Xavier Labour Relations Institute with the initial course for Management and Trade Unions. As such, it is by far one of the oldest management institute of the country. Over the years, many new courses were added to the institute's list. They introduced the two year full time programme in Main Industrial Relations Welfare in 1953 which was later re-names as the Human Resource Management program. To this day, human Resource Management Programme at the XLRI continues to be recognized by the industry as the best program in the discipline. Needless to say, many XLRI alumni are at the helm of the discipline. Famous examples of the same would be Ms. Leena Nair who is the Chief HR Officer at Unilever and Mr. Vineet Nayyar, the former CEO of HCL Technologies. XLRI at present offers various full time programs like the full-time, 2-year, post-graduate program in Business Management, Personnel Management and Human Resources Management (replaced Industrial Relations program in 2011), Global Business Management, and a 15-month, full-time, General Management program (PGDM-GM), a doctoral fellow program (FPM), and several executive education programs like Executive Fellow Programme in Management (Exec-FPM), the three year Executive Post Graduate Programmes (Exec-PGP) in India, Dubai, and Singapore; Post Graduate Programme for Certificate in Entrepreneurship Management (PGP-CEM), 6 month Post Graduate Certification in Agri-Business Management (PGCABM) which is a joint management program of Ikisan Ltd. and XLRI; 12 month courses of Post Graduate Certification in Business Management (PGCBM), Post Graduate Certification in Logistics and Supply Chain Management (PGCLSCM), Post Graduate Certification in Human Resource Management (PGCHRM), Post Graduate Certification in Retail Management (PGCRM), Post Graduate Certification in Sales & Marketing Management (PGCSMM), Executive Diploma Programme in Human Resource Management ; Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) in Singapore; General Management Programme for Defense Personnel; Management Development Programmes and International Student Exchange Programmes. XLRI continuously ranks among the top 5 Management institutes in India. It was ranked at number 4 in 2015 16 among 91 government and private management institutes. Fr. E. Abraham is the current Director of the institute. Its Dean of Academics is Dr. Pranabesh Ray. Dr. Ray himself is an alumnus of XLRI and has been associated with the institute since 1990 after an illustrious career with some of the majors in Textiles and Power sector. He became the academic dean in 2010. Apart from him, Dr. Santanu Sarkar is the Associate Dean of programs, Fr James Santhanam is the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Associate Dean of Corporate Programs is Dr. M.G. Jomon. The board f directors for the institute include industry big wigs like Mr. T.V. Narendran who is the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Rajive Kaul (Chairman of NICCO Corporation Ltd.), Sumit Mazumder (President of Confederation of Indian Industry and Chairman & Managing Director of TIL Ltd.), Rekha M Menon (Managing Director-HR, Accenture), and Subodh Bhargava (Chairman of Tata Communications Ltd.). The institute also enjoys a close association with Tata Steel (due to its proximity to the institute) and organizes the famous 3 day outbound program to TSAF camp (Tata Steel Adventure Foundation) for its entire batch at the start of the course. The institute has a lot of student activities (nearly 21 committee at the campus) which are driven to provide a holistic learning experience to the incumbents. Their Ensemble, which is an annual international management festival of XLRI School of Business and Human Resources and Valhalla (three day national inter college and cultural festival) are quite famous across the management circles and provide a unique platform for students to interact with other students from various top management institutes of the country. The 50 acre campus is located at Jamshedpur surrounded by Dalma Hills in the north and Tata Iron & Steel Company in the South. The campus has 4 residential facilities which has a total of 400 rooms. The admission to the full time programs is done through a XLRI conducted test XAT while the admission to various executive programs is through GMAT. For the MDP, the admission is through both direct applications as well as nominations. XAT or Xavier Aptitude Test is conducted by XLRI every year in the month of January for admission to its full time courses that commence from September of the same year. The exam is a pen and paper based test and conducted across various centers in the country. It tests its candidates on Quantitative Ability, English Language & Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, GK & Essay. XAT 2017 would be conducted on January 8, 2017. The registrations for the same opened in the month of August 2016 and would close by December 2016. Students who are desirous of studying at this premier institute need to clear the exam and admissions are purely on the basis of the performance in XAT. XAT is also used by about another 140 management institutes in the country.
