AKSHAY KUMAR CALLS OMG 2 AN ‘ADULT FILM MEANT FOR TEENAGERS’

After the screening of his latest film, Akshay sarcastically asked the audiences, “Kaisi lagi aap logo ko movie? Pehli adult film hai jo teenagers ke liye bani hai. Actually yeh sab schools mein dikhani chahiye, lekin aap sab entertain huye nah? Bahut acha laga, bahut-bahut shukriya aap log aye dekhne (How did you find the film? This is the first adult film that has been made specifically for teenagers. It should be actually shown in schools, but at least you all got entertained watching it. I am very happy you came to watch the film).” For the unversed, the makers of OMG 2 had applied for a U/A certificate as the film was meant for creating awareness about sex education among teenagers. However, the censor board not only objected to certain dialogues and scenes but also Akshay’s portrayal of Lord Shiva. The actor’s role was modified from Lord Shiva to messenger of God. The critics have given a thumbs up to the Amit Rai directorial and lauded the social dramedy on a sensitive subject.

OMG 2 also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam, Pawan Malhotra, Govind Namdeo and Arun Govil in crucial roles.

ZEISHAN QADRI SLAMS ADIPURUSH WRITERS

Gangs of Wasseypur writer-actor Zeishan Qadri recently slammed Adipurush writers and called them ‘immature’ for not doing proper ‘research’. In an interaction with ETimes, he said, “I feel the writers were immature, you cannot put dialogues in the way they first presented in the movie. And if you feel that this is how mythological events are narrated, then sorry, you are not telling a katha (story). A film is a much larger scale and it has a worldwide release. I’m falling short of words for this. Whether you feel good or bad, but this was very immature writing and majorly it has upset the audience worldwide.” Zeishan further added, “Ramayan is not your life, you are just a writer. It is part of a religion and how can you take it so lightly. Even when we made a film like Wasseypur, we put in so much research, whether we are portraying things correctly or not. So, one needs to research their audience also. Ramayan has been created numerous times, any Indian would know about it irrespective of their religion. So you need to research the audience on how they will react, which I feel they missed out on.”

Adipurush also stars Sunny Singh, Saif Ali Khan, Sonal Chauhan an Vatsal Seth in crucial roles.

In a short video shared by PTI on their X handle, the 72-year-old was seen arriving at the holy place on Saturday. He was spotted in a light blue shirt, trousers and completed his look with a traditional shawl and sneakers. As he stepped inside the temple, fans were seen extending their hands to meet him. Tirupur Subramaniam, who is the film distributor and head of Tamil Nadu’s Theatre Owners’ Association, had told PTI earlier: “It is a Rajinikanth film. Of course, it will be ushered in with celebrations. We don’t have fan shows any more like before, but that is not dampening the spirit of the fans. The movie is being shown in 900 screens across Tamil Nadu and all of them wear a festive look.”

‘Jailer’ is touted to be an action-packed entertainer and has a stellar star cast that includes Priyanka Mohan, Shiva Rajkumar, Tamannaah Bhatia, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Vasanth Ravi, Vinayakan in prominent roles. The film has gained a massive opening at theatres and is expected to beat the lifetime collection of Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe, Sivaji: The Boss, Lingaa and Kaala.

JAILER ACHIEVES HISTORIC FEAT AT BOX OFFICE

Jailer collected Rs 34.30 Crore on Saturday against its Friday collection which stood at Rs 25.75 Crore, as reported by the entertainment portal Sacnilk. The second day earnings were disappointing as the movie had already set a record of Rs 48.35 Crore on Friday. Tamannaah Bhatia’s peppy track Kaavaalaa, got a positive response from movie buffs as they compared her look with Shakira from Wakka Wakka and Hips Don’t Lie. Jailer also stars Malayalam superstar Mohanlal in a crucial role. Having the two great legends of Indian cinema in a film also created buzz among cinephiles. Jailer is expected to garner Rs 35.oo Crore on Sunday, as reported by Sacnilk.

5 CAREER-DEFINING FILMS OF THE LATE ACTRESS SRIDEVI

1. Sadma (1983): A beautiful story of a man rescuing from a brothel a grown-up girl who behaves like a 6-year-old due to a car accident resulting in a brain injury. Weeks pass by as he cares for and protects her from one and all. Sridevi was given much praise for her performance in this film as she convincingly played the part without sounding too cute.
2. Chaalbaaz (1989): Anju and Manju are separated twins, and are poles apart in nature. Sridevi here plays a double role for the first time as she plays both the twins and she puts in a great performance as well. While the gentle Anju is bullied by all, Manju is a street-smart girl. By a twist of fate, they end up switching places and causing an upheaval.
3. Mr India (1987): How could this not make the list? The song ‘Kaate Nahin Kat Te‘ comes from this film where she oozed sensuality in that iconic blue chiffon saree in the song. The film was a turning point for Sridevi as the film was loved and recognised, especially by the lead stars Anil Kapoor and Ms Journalist Sridevi in the film.
4. Judaai (1996): Sridevi’s last film before she bowed out of the industry, where she gave it her all. The actress was splendid in the film and ended her legendary career on a high. Judaai is a melodrama directed by the late Raj Kanwar. It features Sridevi at her absolute best. The way she lifts some mundane scenes has to be seen to be believed.
5. English Vinglish (2012): This film marked Sridevi’s comeback in the film industry that gave the language difference message before Hindi Medium. Yup, Sridevi did it before it was cool. In this film, Sridevi is playing a housewife and caterer who is usually mocked by her family for not knowing English. Her attempt to learn the language helps her rediscover herself and reassert her value as a mother and as a wife.

OMG 2 SEES RISE IN EARNINGS ON DAY 2

OMG 2 collected Rs 25.56 Crore at the box office with its combined two-day earnings. Although the film started at a slower pace on Friday with a mere Rs 10.26 Crore, it garnered Rs 15.30 Crore on Saturday, as reported by movie business analyst Taran Adarsh. The satirical dramedy is expected to collect Rs 18.00 Crore on Sunday, as reported by the entertainment portal Sacnilk. The makers of the film had disagreement with the censor board as they had applied for a U/A certificate. OMG 2 team wanted teenagers below 18 years to watch the social drama which creates awareness about the need for sex education. However, certain dialogues quoting Hindu scriptures had to go through CBFC cuts. The CBFC also had objections over Akshay portraying Lord Shiva. Addressing their concern, the makers changed his character as the messenger of God.

In a scene, Kanti highlights how it’s important to say the right thing in a way that pleases ears. And that’s exactly what the film also does. It pleases you by telling you to do the right thing.”

GADAR 2 CREATES BOX OFFICE STORM WITH RISE IN ITS EARNINGS

Gadar 2 witnessed a rise in its earnings as it garnered around Rs 43 Crore at the box office, as reported by the entertainment portal Sacnilk. The report further suggested that the movie is expected to earn Rs 48 Crore on its first Sunday, which could easily help in entering the Rs 100 Crore club. The Sunny-Ameesha starrer period-action-drama has become the second biggest opener of 2023 after Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan. Coincidentally both films were loved by the movie-goers for their high-octane-action and edge-of-the-seat thrills. Gadar 2 has all elements of a larger-than-life PAN (popular-across-nation) India entertainer. The massive crowds outside both single-screen theaters and multiplexes showcase the craze for the movie. Gadar 2 has surpassed the collection of Sultan, Dhoom 3, and Brahmastra – Part One: Shiva and Adipurush (Hindi) to become the top seventh-highest Bollywood opener of all time.

GOOGLE DOODLE REMEMBERS ICONIC STAR SRIDEVI

Google credited Mumbai-based guest artist Bhumika Mukherjee for creating the lovely doodle artwork. The doodle paid homage to Sridevi, who was shown in a poised dancing position, and conveyed the spirit and aura of an Indian film with a dramatic typeface and warm colours. The caption next to the Google Doodle read, “Today’s Doodle celebrates Indian actress Sridevi, who is widely considered one of the most influential Bollywood actresses of all time (sic).”

A part of the description on the tech giant read, “Sridevi took a break from acting in the early 2000s before starring in television shows like Malini and Kaboom. She then joined the Asian Academy of Film & Television board of directors. In 2012, she announced her comeback with English Vinglish; the film marked her successful return as a leading lady in Bollywood after a long hiatus. The Indian government also honoured her with the Padma Shri. In 2017, Sridevi starred in the crime thriller Mom as a rage-filled and protective mother, earning her the National Film Award for best actress.”

“Sridevi forever made her mark on the film industry by charting new avenues for women to take on leading roles in Indian cinema. She will be remembered as one of the greatest Indian actors of her time. Happy birthday, Sridevi! (sic), Google concluded.

SRIDEVI LEFT A SIGNIFICANT MARK ON THE CINEMA INDUSTRY

Sridevi aka Shree Amma Yanger Ayyappan paved the way for artists in the cinema business. One of the first actors to become a superstar both in the South and the North. Sridevi dismantled obstacles for women and opened the road wide to success.

Did you know that Sridevi also received the Padma Shri award from the Indian government in 2013? She won the National Film Award for best actress later that year for the murder thriller ‘Mom,’ which is about a ferociously protective mother. Sadma, ChaalBaz, Mr India, Nagina, Chandni, Lamhe, and are some of her popular movies.

Sridevi is survived by two daughters, Janhvi Kapoor and Khushi Kapoor, and film producer-husband Boney Kapoor. Sadly, the actress drowned by accident in Dubai in 2018 and passed tragically.

For many years to come, next generations of Indian performers will be inspired by Sridevi’s legacy.

When the Pakistani news portal asked the public in the country about their reaction on Gadar 2, they came up with hilarious response. A person told a journalist that, “Whatever may be our situation, but we have the courage to overpower our enemy. As far as I know, the Pakistanis have defeated India in four wars,” the reporter interrupted and reminded him that the case is vice-versa. An over enthusiast Pakistani citizen went ahead to claim that one Pakistani is equal to thousand Indian soldiers. He even challenged Sunny Deol to have a one-to-one duel with him.

KAMAAL R KHAN GETS TROLLED FOR CALLING GADAR 2 C-GRADE FILM

Kamaal was bashed by netizens for his review. Many users called him out for his hypocrisy. For the unversed, Kamaal is also a failed actor and director. His films Deshdrohi and Dishdrohi 2 bombed at the box office. Ever since, he has reviewing Bollywood movies. He shot to fame by making allegations against Bollywood actors during Sushant Singh Rajput death probe. The Twiterrati were miffed with him as he had earlier criticised Akshay’s Raksha Bandhan and even questioned his credibility at box office multiple times. KRK had also made derogatory remarks against Deepika Padukone for her song Besharam Rang in Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and made several negative statements related to the spy actioner. Now, as he called Gadar 2 a ‘C’ grade film and compared Utkarsh Sharma with Fardeen Khan, netizens made fun of him and even posted nasty comments. Many users cited his own film Deshdrohi. Deshdrohi despite its box office failure became a huge meme material on social media. A fan quoted Sunny’s dialogue from the film and tweeted, “Katora leke bheekh mangoge tum aur bheekh bhi nahi milegi (Even when you will beg, no charity will be given). In the film Sunny’s Tara Singh taunts the Pakistani army officer with teh same line.

WHO IS JASWANT SINGH KHALRA, DILJIT’S CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE?

Jaswant Singh Khalra was a human rights activist who was also the director of a bank in Amritsar during the insurgency period. He hailed from a family of social activists and the belief is still running in his family. His grandfather was a leading activist in the Ghadar movement for India’s Independence. Later his wife also strode in a similar direction of activism like her husband.

Khalra came under the radar following Operation Blue Star, the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the Anti-Sikh riots. During this militancy period, Khalra led a battle against alleged fake encounters of Sikh youth by police. He reportedly found evidence against Punjab police regarding the abduction, encounter and cremation of over 25,000 Sikhs without record. He also claimed that around 2000 police officers were also killed who refused to cooperate in the movement.

The Centre Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Supreme Court after a thorough inquiry observed that the police did actually kill several youths under the pretext of being militants.

Later, in September 1995, Khalra disappeared in the blue. He was last seen washing his car in Amritsar and no one ever saw him again. Almost a decade later, six police officials were convicted of his murder after a long CBI investigation.

WHAT IS THE CONTROVERSY AROUND PUNJAB 95?

Punjabi singer and actor Dilijit Dosanjh has always reigned the hearts of his audience and it was in July when he released the first look of the movie announcing its premiere at TIFF. However, its name is nowhere on the list now, as per Variety. The film had to pass through several cuts and changes as suggested by CBFC.

Initially, the movie, directed by Honey Trehan, was named Ghallughara. The name traces its origin to a word that refers to a massive massacre of Sikhs in the 17th century. The CBFC stated that a few scenes from the movie potentially can incite violence and affect India’s relations with foreign states as well. Later RSVP filed a petition on Bombay High Court but the verdict is still awaited.

After a battle of several months with the censor board, the film was issued an A-grade certification and demanded 21 cuts and modifications of a few dialogues.

Punjab 95 is a  Honey Trehan movie featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Arjun Rampal. It is inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.

GADAR 2 DIRECTOR ANIL SHARMA REACTS TO BOLLYWOOD CTORS CHARGING RS 150 CRORE

Speaking about the making of the film, Anil, in an interaction with Lehren Retro said, “It was a reasonable budget. We really made an effort to control everybody’s fees. Sunny’s fee is what it is, it’s okay, it’s just one person, but even he compromised quite a bit. These days, heroes and directors charge so much, the budgets end up ballooning up to Rs 600 crore, and sometimes the heroes charge Rs 150 Crore and Rs 200 Crore.” Om Raut’s epic Adipurush based on sage Valmiki’s Ramayan was based on a large-scale budget, which was around Rs 500-600 Crore. The film tanked at the box office. It was not only slammed for its bad VFX, but also for disrespecting religious sentiments associated with Lord Ram. For the unversed, Prabhas is known for charging high fees in movies post the success of SS Rajamouli’s Baahubali – The Beginning and Baahubali – The Conclusion. Apart from Prabhas, Akshay Kumar is also considered one of the highest paid Bollywood actors. The Gadar 2 director’s statement could possibly be an indirect jibe at Adipurush’s debacle and Akshay Kumar’s fees.
