The officer was from Muzaffarpur in Bihar. He joined the Indian Navy in 2021 and was deployed onboard INS Vikrant after the commissioning of the indigenous aircraft carrier. “Prime facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. A statutory Board of Inquiry is being ordered,” Indian Navy official said in a statement.

The sailor was found hanging in one of the warship’s compartments, said officials, adding that the navy has ordered an inquiry into the matter. The sailor was not an Agniveer and was from the regular cadre, said one of the officials cited above, asking not to be named.

The 45,000-ton Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, was constructed at Cochin Shipyard for a cost of Rs 20,000 crore. Only the US, the UK, Russia, France and China have the capability to build aircraft carriers this size.

Vikrant is 262 metres long, has a height of 61 metres (keel to mast) and its flight deck measures 12,500 square metres (equivalent to 10 Olympic-size swimming pools.) It has an endurance of 7,500 nautical miles, a maximum speed of 28 knots, 2,300 compartments and can carry a crew of 1,600.

According to the police, hundreds of villagers had gathered outside the electricity department office near Barsoi town to protest irregular power supply and exorbitant tarrifs.

“Police opened fire and baton-charged the protesters when some of them indulged in stone-pelting,” Deputy SP of Barsoi sub-division Prem Nath Ram told news agency PTI.

The officer said a 34-year-old man, identified as Khurshid Alam, a resident of Baasal village, died in the firing while two others were injured and have been rushed to a hospital.

“Khurshid Alam, a resident of Baasal village, has died. Two others, hailing from adjoining villages, were rushed to a hospital,” he said.

A graphic video shared on Twitter shows at least three bullet-riddled men lying in a pool of blood on the ground. However, India.com could not independently verify the veracity of the video.

Katihar Superintendent of Police Jitendra Kumar said heavy deployment of forces has been made in the area to maintain law and order.

Chaotic visuals shared on social media platforms show the protesters hurling stones at the police respond with baton charge and firing to quell the protest.

Leader of the opposition in the state assembly Vijay Kumar Sinha, who was in the district for a BJP programme, also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

Union Minister Nityanand Rai lashed out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government over police action against protesters. “People were protesting against power cut in Katihar, but the police opened fire at them, killing one person. This (Bihar) government does not have a right to stay in power,” Rai said, according to news agency PTI.

Locals claimed that at least five people were hit by bullets at the protest site.

Dubbing the Nitish Kumar regime as a “government of atrocities” Bihar BJP leader Samrat Choudhary condemned the incident, saying that the government lathi-charged and shot people for demanding their rights.

“Bihar CM Nitish Kumar’s govt lathi-charged those asking for the 10 lakh govt jobs. Now, in his ‘Raj’, on demanding electricity, people are being shot…No good governance, no facilities for the public. This is a govt of atrocities…There is no hope left…” Choudhary told news agency ANI.

Anything For Love: Bihar Girl Shuts Power To Entire Village To Meet Boyfriend https://www.india.com/bihar/anything-for-love-bihar-girl-shuts-power-to-entire-village-to-meet-boyfriend-6183848/ Sun, 23 Jul 2023 14:29:59 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6183848 New Delhi: It is often said that people can move mountains for love and go to extreme lengths in order to be with their beloved, this old adage recently came to life in Bihar’s Bettiah district where a girl risked the wrath on an entire village as she would often shut the power supply of the entire hamlet to meet her boyfriend during the night.

According to reports, the girl, Preeti often used to cut the power supply to the entire village to meet her boyfriend, Rajkumar, under the cover of darkness. However, while the lovebirds relished their nighttime strolls, residents in two villages of Bihar’s West Champaran region faced troubles due to the frequent power cuts perpetrated by the lovesick girl, India Today reported.

As per the report, the young girl’s antics and her love affair with Rajkumar had caused tension between the two villages as concerned villagers were unable to determine the reasons behind the power cuts which plagued them since the past one week.

However, the young couple’s night-time escapades would soon come to a halt when they were caught red-handed by the villagers bring the love affair to light, literally, and ending the mystery behind the unexplained power cuts.

Troubled by frequent power outages, the villagers had also lodged multiple complaints with the electricity department, but to no avail. The villagers finally decided to investigate what was causing the power crisis in their village and when the power was shut again, they ventured out and to their surprise, found Preeti and Rajkumar together under the cover of darkness.

“Preeti used to cut off the electricity of the village every night due to which many thefts were reported in the village. That girl troubled us a lot,” the report quoted a villager, Govinda Chaudhary, as saying.

The infuriated villagers thrashed Rajkumar with sticks even as Preeti tried to save her lover from the assault, a viral video on social media shows. The young man later came back with his friends to avenge the assault and thrashed some villagers.

One video shows some boys from the village asking Preeti who she is with and telling others to record the incident on camera. However, the defiant girl backs her lover and saves him from the group of boys.

Fearing that things might escalate further, elders from the two villagers later sat down and decided to get Rajkumar and Preeti married to resolve the matter.

And thus, this strange yet familiar love story received a happy ending as the lovebirds were wed at a local temple.

Newly-Wed Bihar Woman Strangled To Death By In-Laws For Objecting To Husband’s Extra-Marital Affair https://www.india.com/bihar/newly-wed-bihar-woman-strangled-to-death-by-in-laws-for-objecting-to-husbands-extra-marital-affair-6178592/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 17:27:40 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6178592 Gopalganj, Bihar: A doctor’s newly-wed bride in Alapur village of Bihar’s Gopalganj district was allegedly strangled to death by her in-laws after she objected to her husband purportedly having an extramarital affair. According to reports, the deceased victim, identified as Nisha, got married to Dr. Mukesh Kumar earlier this year on February 28.

A few days into her marriage with Dr Kumar, Nisha found out that her husband was allegedly having an affair. The shocking revelation led to strife between the newly-wed couple and resulted in frequent arguments between the two as Nisha raised objection to her husband’s purported adultery, India Today reported.

As per the report, Nisha had told her family members about her husband’s extramarital affair as well as the resultant arguments between the couple that ensued due her objecting to Mukesh’s alleged unfaithfulness.

Nisha Kumari, daughter of Shambhu Sharan Prasad—a resident of Savna village in Bihar’s Siwan district—was found dead on Tuesday night at her in-laws’ house under mysterious circumstances, barely four months after marriage.

The in-laws claimed that she hanged herself; however, the victim’s family has accused Nisha’s husband and in-laws of killing her. They claimed that Mukesh’s family strangled her and beat her to death and then made it look like she had died by suicide.

On Wednesday morning, upon learning about their daughter’s death, the victim’s family immediately informed the police who arrived at the purported crime scene and sent the body of the deceased for autopsy.

The body was later handed over to the family for last rites. However, as a mark of protest against the alleged murder, the aggrieved family cremated her in front of her in-laws’ house in Alapur despite vocal objections from villagers.

Police said that based on the family’s complaint, an FIR has been registered in connection with the case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and her husband has been arrested and is being questioned.

“Further investigation is ongoing,” they said.

Viral: Bihar Groom Thrashed By Bride’s Family After Finding Out He’s Bald | Watch https://www.india.com/viral/viral-bihar-groom-thrashed-by-brides-family-after-finding-out-hes-bald-watch-6165195/ Thu, 13 Jul 2023 15:46:17 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6165195 Gaya, Bihar: In a bizarre yet hilarious incident, a groom in Bihar’s Gaya district was beaten up by the bride’s family at the wedding ceremony after the latter found out that he was bald and was trying to “deceive” them by donning a wig to hide his baldness.

A video of the humorous incident which has gone viral on social media platforms shows the bride’s family assaulting and verbally abusing the groom who is seen pleading for mercy with folded hands. However, the bride’s family members do not relent and continue to rain down blow after blow upon the man.

According to an India Today report, the incident took place in Bajaura village of Gaya district, under the Dobhi police station limits, where the groom had arrived for his second marriage to a younger woman. The man, a resident of Iqbalpur area of the district, had worn a wig under the ‘Sehra’ (a traditional headdress worn by grooms in India), apparently to hide the fact that he was bald underneath from the bride and her family.

However, the bride’s family noticed that something was off and got suspicious that he was bald. Ultimately, one family member tugged on his hair, pulling of the Sehra along with the wig, exposing the groom’s bald head.

Upon realizing that they had been deceived, the bride’s family became furious and started verbally abusing and thrashing the groom. The man is seen apologising with folded, however, the family of the bride refuse to show mercy and keep assaulting him, even as some of the guests at the wedding can be seen trying to intervene and diffuse the situation.

As per the report, the man was still married to his first wife and had reportedly that fact from the family of his second bride. This made the situation worse as the relatives of the bride accused him of duping them by hiding such crucial information.

‘Eyes Cut Out, Mutilated Private Parts’: Woman Brutally Beaten to Death in Bihar https://www.india.com/news/india/bihar-woman-beaten-to-death-eyes-cut-out-private-parts-mutilated-thrashed-killed-crime-top-news-bihar-news-6158506/ Mon, 10 Jul 2023 08:48:49 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6158506 Bihar: A horrific and shocking incident has come to light from Bihar, where a middle-aged woman was brutally attacked and thrashed to death over a land dispute in Khagaria district. Police have arrested four people in connection with the incident.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the 45-year-old woman was attacked by four men on bikes while she was sowing paddy in her field in Mehandipur village. The assailants brutally beat her to death, cut her eyes out with a knife, and mutilated her private parts.

According to an eyewitness, “Four people on two bikes beat up the woman while she was working in the farm, gouged her eyes out with a knife, cut her tongue, and mutilated her private parts. She died on the spot,” they told the police.

The victim’s family members have accused their five neighbours of the heinous murder. The accused include Mahendra Singh, Rulo Singh, Rajdev Singh, Fulungi Singh, and Shyam Kumar Singh.

It is worth noting that the victim’s family had been engaged in a long-standing dispute over a portion of land with these five neighbours. Tragically, she is the third person from her family to be killed in relation to this dispute, following the murders of her husband and brother-in-law.

Police have lodged an FIR against the five accused under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“We have filed an FIR against the five accused. We have formed separate teams to arrest them,” a police official stated.

The horrific incident has sparked protests in the village, with some local villagers blocking National Highway 31 with the victim’s body and refusing to move until the accused are apprehended. They later ended their protest after receiving assurance from the police.

Further investigation in connection with the case is underway.

Meet Dilkhush Kumar, Rickshaw-Puller Turned CEO Who Now Hires IIT, IIM Graduates https://www.india.com/business/meet-dilkhush-kumar-rickshaw-puller-turned-ceo-who-now-hires-iit-iim-graduates-rodbez-6143979/ Sun, 02 Jul 2023 06:25:40 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6143979 “For those who dare to dream, there is a whole world to win,” Dhirubai Ambani said. Successful people will tell you that making it big in any field requires patience, courage, and hard work. Countless stories about startups, which have been the popular buzzword recently, have inspired us to dream big.

In India, we have seen how startups and unicorns have grown in the past ten years. The number of startups over the years in the country has increased tenfold. India has several stories of entrepreneurs who dared to pursue their dream and went from broke to millionaires. The story of Dilkhush Kumar serves as a beacon of hope for upcoming entrepreneurs.

The Success Story Of Dilkhush Kumar

Born in a quaint village in Bihar’s Saharasa district, Dilkhush Kumar worked as a rickshaw puller and vegetable vendor. Kumar is now the founder and CEO of RodBez, an app-based taxi service. He had studied till Class 12 and worked as a rickshaw puller and sold vegetables online to keep up with his financial expenses.

In 2011, Kumar moved to Patna and worked as a driver. He also worked in an electrical wiring job to make ends meet. However, he left the job as the salary never came on time. He tried his hands as a vegetable vendor but that did not help and so he went back to his old driving job. It was during this time that he started researching the availability of cab services in particular areas.

“People want to avail services which are cheaper and convenient. And drivers want more passengers. We found routes that have more demand for cab services and availability of taxi drivers at a particular time. We designed an algorithm to match real-time cabs and riders going on the same route. With a simple search, it shows better cab availability,” Dilkhush Kumar was quoted as saying in a report by Better India.

Dilkhush Kumar developed the RodBez app, which is Bihar’s largest “one-way taxi, taxi pool and carpool platform,” according to the company’s website. Customers do not need to pay two-way return fares when they are travelling one way. Verified customers come together and help each other through carpool, taxi pool and one-way rides via the RodBez app.

Kumar credits will “berojgaari (joblessness) background for the inspiration behind the app’s name. “We come from a very backward area, which is infamous for badh (floods) and berojgaari (joblessness). I was labelled ‘nikamma’ (useless) as I was dependent on my father’s income,” Dilkhush Kumar said.

Dilkhush Kumar started the company with a Tata Nano and his team has raised Rs 4 crore after the launch of the RodBez app in six to seven months. He has hired IIT and IIM graduates in his company.

In Bihar, It Is Now Necessary To Inform Local Police About Marriages; Here’s Why https://www.india.com/bihar/bihar-new-marriage-guidelines-rule-inform-local-police-about-marriage-shadi-tilak-celebratory-firing-6142328/ Sat, 01 Jul 2023 02:45:13 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6142328 Patna: Wedding celebrations are supposed to be happy events but celebratory firings during such occasions are turning into mourning for many families. Hence, the Bihar police have come up with a new idea to stop celebratory firing at weddings in the state by asking people to inform their local police stations about any marriage taking place in the family.

“It has been observed that there have been a number of deaths and injuries due to celebratory firing in the state. Hence, we have asked the people of the state, marriage lawns, banquet halls, dharmshalas owners to inform local police about every marriage,” ADGP Law and Order, Sanjay Singh said.

Under the new guidelines, marriage lawns, banquet halls, and dharamshalas owners have to maintain security protocols including CCTV cameras in all corners.

People organising marriages at their home also have to inform the police, providing the list of license weapons they have and also provide the list of guests to the local police station as well.

It has been observed that people in enthusiasm used to fire in the air during marriage functions, birthday parties, marriage anniversary parties etc. “Unnecessarily firing is a criminal offence and the offenders are liable to face action and jail terms,” the ADGP said.

“We have registered 99 cases of celebratory firing in 2022 in which 8 persons were killed and 36 injured. We have seized 18 weapons and cancelled 8 arms licenses as well. In 2023 till May 31, 9 persons lost their lives in such firing while 13 persons were injured. We have arrested 72 persons in this connection and seized 3 weapons,” he added.

This State Bans Jeans, T-Shirts And Other Casual Outfits For Education Department Employees https://www.india.com/bihar/this-state-bans-jeans-t-shirts-and-other-casual-outfits-for-education-department-employees-6139433/ Thu, 29 Jun 2023 09:26:25 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6139433 New Delhi: Casual outfits such as jeans and T-shirts have been banned for the employees of the Bihar education department. In an order, the Bihar government said the ongoing practices of wearing casual attire go against the culture at the workplace.

The director (administration) of the education department said it has taken exception to employees coming to offices in T-shirts and jeans. “It has been noticed that officials and employees of the department are coming to offices in attires which are contrary to the office culture. Wearing casuals in the office by officials or other employees is against the work culture in the office,” the order stated.

“Therefore, all officials and employees should come to education department offices in formal dresses only. No casual dresses, especially jeans and T-shirts, are allowed in the offices of the education department with immediate effect,” says the order which is in the possession of PTI.

‘Jeans, T-Shirts Do Not Qualify As Formal Outfit’

In April, the district magistrate of Bihar’s Saran district barred all government employees from wearing jeans and T-shirts in government offices. They were asked to wear formal dresses and carry identity cards.

The District Magistrate said that he would undertake surprise inspections of particular departments and could also do video conferencing or video calling to check the status of the directive. He has warned the employees to strictly follow the new guidelines, especially the dress code, and warned that offenders would be penalised.

The Bihar government had, in 2019, banned wearing jeans and T-shirts in the state secretariat, irrespective of the employees’ ranks. The aim was to maintain “office decorum” and the government had asked employees of the state secretariat to wear simple, comfortable and light-coloured outfits in the office.

Last year, the Maharashtra Government imposed a ban on the wearing of T-shirts and jeans by employees in the state secretariat and government offices.

Additionally, in 2021, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal also made it mandatory for all officers and staffers of the agency to be formally dressed in the office and said casual wear like jeans and sports shoes will not be tolerated.

Video: Outcry As Another Under-Construction Bridge In Bihar Caves In https://www.india.com/bihar/video-outcry-as-another-under-construction-bridge-in-bihar-caves-in-6130264/ Sat, 24 Jun 2023 12:05:18 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6130264 Kishanganj, Bihar: Another under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar’s  Kishanganj on Saturday, barely three weeks after a bridge over the Ganga river had caved-in in Khagaria district. Reports said a portion of the bridge on the Machhi River collapsed in the middle.

A PTI report quoting National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) project director, Arvind Kumar, said the incident took place around 400 km from state capital Patna when a pillar of the under-construction bridge over the Machhi river collapsed causing the structure to collapse in the middle.

“The under-construction bridge on NH-327E would have linked Kishanganj and Katihar upon completion”, PTI quoted Kumar as saying. The official said that nobody was injured in the accident, adding that an five-member team of experts has been constituted to investigate the cause.

“Prima facie it seems to be an instance of human error during the piling process,” the official said, according to PTI.

The bridge has been built by construction company GR Infraprojects Limited at a budget of Rs 1,546 crore and is part of the Araria-Galgaliya four-lane road on National Highway 327, India Today reported. Quoting locals who called for action against the construction firm, the report said that the third pillar of the bridge had collapsed.

This is the second such incident reported from Bihar this month evoking concern and outrage from experts and citizens alike who have called for a thorough audit and probe to pin down the cause of these cave-ins.

On June 4, an under-construction bridge, which was supposed to connect Khagaria district with Bhagalpur, had collapsed. The incident claimed the life of a security guard and evoked a huge outcry since despite an initial deadline of November 2019, it remained incomplete.

The Aguwani Sultanganj Ganga bridge, which was being constructed at a cost of Rs 1,717 crore, collapsed, when a 3-feet long portion of the bridge caved and crashed into the Ganga river below. The bridge had also sustained some damage in a storm in April last year.

The shocking collapse was caught on camera and showed parts of the bridge crashing like dominoes.

The Bihar Engineering Services Association had expressed concern and stressed on the need for “structural audit” of all bridges, complete as well as under-construction, in the state.

After the incident, the Bihar government had directed the building construction department to conduct an inquiry into the collapse.

He created a bot and shared it on Telegram. We know he was not selling the data to anyone in particular. He tried hacking the system and was successful. When he realised he could put all the data online, he did. We don’t think he had any other ulterior motives,” said an officer.

Last week, reports surfaced on a purported breach of data of beneficiaries registered on the CoWIN platform. The data had been accessed by a Telegram bot which revealed the gender, date of birth, Aadhaar details, address, centre for vaccination etc. of beneficiaries.

The government has termed such reports “mischievous” and “without any basis” while asserting that the CoWIN portal is completely safe with adequate safeguards for data privacy. The government said the CoWIN website, a repository of all data of those who have been vaccinated against Covid-19, maintains strong data privacy safeguards.

The matter was sent for a review by the country’s nodal cyber security agency CERT-In, which said in its initial report, that the backend database for the Telegram bot, which is at the centre of the alleged leak, was not directly accessing the APIs of the CoWIN database. In a statement, the Union Health Ministry said that an internal exercise has been initiated to review the existing security measures.

CoWIN portal is a repository of all data of all those who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the country.

Crocodile Beaten To Death In Bihar’s Vaishali After It Devoured 14-Year-Old Boy https://www.india.com/viral/crocodile-beaten-to-death-in-bihars-vaishali-after-it-devoured-14-year-old-boy-6110178/ Wed, 14 Jun 2023 11:03:22 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6110178 Patna: A crocodile was beaten to death with sticks and iron rods by irate villagers in Vaishali district of Bihar after the reptile devoured a 14-year-old boy on the banks of the Ganga river at Khalsa Ghat in Raghopur Diyara Island.

According to an NDTV report, Ankit Kumar, 14, had gone to bathe in the Ganga and also fetch some Gangajal to perform a religious ritual for his newly-bought motorcycle when he was attacked by a crocodile and reportedly devoured alive by the report.

Ankit’s family had bought him a new motorcycle and had gone to take a dip in the Ganga and also fetch some Gangajal for using in a puja for the new vehicle, the report said. However, the family’s joy soon turned to ashes as Ankit was suddenly attacked by a crocodile while he was bathing and pulled under the water by the reptilian predator and ripped to pieces.

Upon witnessing the horrific scene, the family rushed to their son’s rescue but in vain as the boy had been ripped to shreds by the reptile, and by the time they managed to pull his remains from the river, a huge crowd had gathered at the scene.

The anguished and irate family members and locals then ensnared the crocodile with the help of a huge fishing net, yanked it out of the water and brutally thrashed it with wooden sticks and rods until the animal succumbed.

A video of the incident which is doing the rounds of the internet shows the beast being subjected to a vicious beatdown by the irate mob.

“We had bought a new motorcycle and went to take a bath in the Ganga and also fetch some Gangajal for a puja. A crocodile caught hold of Ankit, dragged him under the water and killed him. We managed to pull out his remains after an hour and later we pulled out the crocodile and killed it,” Sakaldip Das, the grandfather of the deceased boy said, according to the report.

The reptile gruesome lynching has been condemned by local authorities who have urged people to refrain people from dishing out vigilante justice and maintain law and order even in the face of distressing circumstances, India Today reported.

The authorities have also urged to report all wildlife-related incident to appropriate authorities for ensuring swift and suitable action, the report said, adding that investigations have been launched to identify the culprits who beat the crocodile to death and ensure fitting action is taken against them.

Quoting officials of the central probe agency, an India Today report said the ED raided 27 places across three states viz. Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal in connection with the illegal mining scam case and seized Rs 1.5 crore in cash and documents of properties worth Rs 11 crore during the searches.

The officials, as per the report, said that two major firms— Broadson Commodities Private Limited, Aditya Multicom Private Limited—were allegedly involved in the scam.

Raids were conducted at the offices of Broadson Commodities Private Limited, Aditya Multicom Private Limited and the offices and homes of their directors as well as the chartered accountants of the two firms in Bihar capital Patna, an ED official said, according to the report.

“The raids have resulted in the seizure of cash, incriminating documents such as sale deeds of properties purchased, FDRs in the name of companies and their directors. Other incriminating physical and digital material found during the search has also been seized for further examination,” the report said while quoting an official statement by the ED.

An official said that the ED, which probes financial crimes, also raided some locations in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad and Hazaribagh and West Bengal capital Kolkata. He said that during the searches, the probe agency sleuths seized Rs 6 crore in fixed deposits and also froze 60 bank accounts linked to various suspects.

According to the India Today report, the Bihar Police had registered FIRs against the accused firms and their directors based on complaints filed by the mining department of Bihar against Broadson Commodities Pvt Ltd and Aditya Multicom Private limited and their directors for illegal sand mining.

In their complaint, the mining department had alleged that the two firms were involved in illegal mining and sale of sand without using the departmental pre-paid transportation, e-Challan, issued by the Mining Authority of Bihar.

The ED’s case stems from the FIRs filed by the Bihar Police which estimates that the scam has resulted in a loss of Rs 250 crore in revenue to the state.
