Headquartered in San Mateo, California, Freshworks operates around the world to serve thousands of customers including Allbirds, Blue Nile, Bridgestone, Databricks, Klarna, NHS, OfficeMax, and PhonePe.

The Nasdaq-listed firm was valued at $12.2 billion after it opened 21 per cent above the initial offering price of $36 apiece in September in 2021. It decided to rebrand itself to Freshworks in June 2017 to incorporate the company’s growing software suite.

We don’t have fan shows any more like before, but that is not dampening the spirit of the fans. The movie is being shown in 900 screens across Tamil Nadu and all of them wear a festive look.”

Fans in Tamil Nadu held prayers for the success of the film, slated to have been made on a big budget.

13-Yr-Old Racing Prodigy Shreyas Hareesh Dies In Fatal Crash On Chennai Track https://www.india.com/tamil-nadu/13-yr-old-racing-prodigy-shreyas-hareesh-dies-in-fatal-crash-on-chennai-track-6209888/ Sun, 06 Aug 2023 10:49:52 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6209888 Chennai: In a tragic incident, Copparam Shreyas Hareesh, a 13-year-old racing prodigy from Bengaluru, died after suffering grievous injuries in a fatal crash on the Madras International Circuit during the third round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship in Chennai on Saturday.

Born on July 26, 2010, Shreyas, a student of Kensri School in Bengaluru, was being hailed as a racing prodigy after winning several races at the National level, including four in a row, competing in the rookie category of the Petronas TVS One-Make Championship this season.

The tragic crash took place soon after the start of the rookie race for which Shreyas had qualified for pole position on Saturday morning. Exiting Turn-1, Shreyas fell following a crash and suffered a grievous head injury.

Dubbed ‘The Bengaluru Kid”, Shreyas was riding a 200cc motorbike when he skidded during the third round of the race. The fall caused his helmet to come off as another rider who was trailing him ran over the rising star, resulting a head injury.

The race was red-flagged immediately and Shreyas was rushed to a nearby hospital in a trauma care ambulance stationed at the track. However, the 13-year-old prodigy was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. His father, Copparam Hareesh was at his bedside.

Following the tragic incident, promoter of the event, Madras Motor Sports Club, cancelled the remaining races scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.

“It is tragic to have lost a rider so young and talented. Shreyas, who was making waves with his prodigious racing talent, was provided medical assistance on the spot immediately after the incident and taken to the hospital,” MMSC president Ajit Thomas told news agency PTI.

“Under the circumstances, we have decided to cancel rest of this weekend’s programme. The MMSC offers heart-felt condolences and our thoughts are with his family.”

In May this year, Shreyas, having won the MiniGP India title, had participated in the MiniGP races in Spain, finishing both races in fifth and fourth positions respectively.

He was scheduled to compete in the MSBK Championship 2023 at Sepang Circuit, Malaysia, in August, representing team CRA Motorsports in the 250cc category (Group B).

It is the second fatality in Indian motorsport this year. In January, KE Kumar, 59, a noted and respected racer, died in hospital following a crash in the second round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Car Racing Championship 2022 at the Madras International Circuit.

Tomato Prices Touch Rs 200 Per Kg In Tamil Nadu, Likely To Increase More https://www.india.com/business/tomato-price-hike-touch-rs-200-per-kg-in-tamil-nadu-likely-to-increase-more-6197253/ Mon, 31 Jul 2023 02:27:05 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6197253 New Delhi: Tomato prices continue to skyrocket in Tamil Nadu as the wholesale price of the red fruit touched Rs 200 per kilogram in the state capital. While the wholesale market was selling tomatoes at Rs 200 per kilogram, in certain retail shops, tomatoes were sold at Rs 185 per kilogram. Traders also said that the price is likely to rise to Rs 250 per kg in a week’s time.

Why Tomato Prices Saw Major Surge In Tamil Nadu

P Sukumaran, secretary of the Koyambedu Wholesale Merchants Association, while speaking to IANS said, “This is the first time since the opening of this market that the price of tomatoes has touched Rs 200 per kilogram. This is unprecedented.

“We were expecting the rates to get steady by July 20 but sudden rain has led to the loss of crops and more than 50 per cent of tomatoes cultivated in Andhra and Karnataka have been lost due to the rain,” Sukumaran said.

The official said that there is a shortage of arrival of tomatoes from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as there was crop loss due to heavy rainfall. “There is a shortage in the arrival of tomatoes from Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh due to the heavy losses in crop due to intermittent rain in these states. Heavy rain has led to a total loss of crops and hence the shortage in the arrival of tomatoes. This has led to the hike in prices of tomatoes in the market,” Sukumaran said.

Other Cities See Tomato Price Hike

Delhi-NCR saw major hike in tomato prices, which used to cost Rs 20-30 per kg, shot up to Rs 110-160 per kg. In response to the skyrocketing price of tomato, fast-food restaurant franchise Subway has taken tomatoes off its menu. To address the challenges posed by the escalating prices and disruptions in the tomato supply chain due to quality concerns, Subway outlets have taken the decision to temporarily suspend the use of tomatoes in their sandwiches and salads.

A notable example of this initiative was observed at a Subway store located in a Delhi airport terminal. The store prominently displayed a sign, politely informing the customers about the “Temporary Unavailability of TOMATOES”.

The sign further clarified that the current unavailability stems from the difficulty in sourcing sufficient tomatoes that adhere to their stringent quality control standards.

A Subway employee at its Sector 16 outlet in Noida told IANS that the vendor is supplying a limited quantity of tomatoes, which has led to this crisis. “The rates are high, and now the vendor, which supplies tomatoes and other veggies to the outlets in Delhi-NCR, is bringing tomatoes in limited quantity due to unavailability,” he said. “We were serving dishes with tomatoes till late afternoon, but now the tomato stock has ended,” he said.

The employee further claimed that all stores in Delhi and its peripherals are going through a similar situation. Earlier this month, McDonald’s in Delhi had released a notice citing the unavailability of tomatoes in their products due to quality concerns during the tomato procurement process.

“Dear Customers, we are ever committed to serving you the best food with the best ingredients. Despite our best efforts, we are not able to get adequate quantities of tomatoes that pass our world-class stringent quality checks. Hence for the time being, we are forced to serve you products without tomatoes,” read the notice outside one of the McDonald’s outlets in Delhi.

“Rest assured; we are working to get the tomato supplies back. We value your patronage and regret the inconvenience caused,” it added.

Tamil Couple In Australia Gets Jail Term For Enslaving Elderly Indian Woman https://www.india.com/news/world/tamil-couple-australia-jail-term-enslaving-elderly-indian-woman-melbourne-afp-tamil-nadu-victoria-slavery-6156973/ Sun, 09 Jul 2023 10:11:47 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6156973 Tamil Couple In Australia: An Australian Tamil woman and her husband from Mount Waverley were convicted and jailed in 2021 after an Australian Federal Police (AFP) investigation established the couple had kept a victim as a slave for eight years.

The couple has been identified as Kumuthini Kannan, 55, and her husband Kandasamy Kannan.

Kumuthini Kannan has been sentenced to additional two-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted of attempting to pervert the course of justice during a slavery investigation.

Kumuthini Kannan and her husband Kandasamy Kannan had forced the victim from Tamil Nadu to live in filthy conditions while cooking, cleaning, and caring for their children before she collapsed.

The victim, believed to be in her sixties now, was admitted to a hospital with severe malnourishment, diabetes, and gangrene of the feet and hands, said the police.

Kumuthini was sentenced on Friday in the County Court of Victoria to a further two years and six months imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to the offence on June 13, 2023.

The Judge ordered that the sentence would start 18 months before the completion of her current sentence for the slavery offences.

The police charged the couple in June 2016 with slavery offences and in 2020, while awaiting trial, Kumuthini attempted to pervert the course of justice by calling the victim to threaten her and warn her not to give evidence during the court proceedings.

Following this, the AFP Human Trafficking Team charged Kumuthini with attempting to pervert the course of justice, contrary to section 43 of the Crimes Act 1914, and the matter was heard separately from the slavery proceedings.

The court in 2021 sentenced Kumuthini to eight years imprisonment with a non-parole period of four years for the slavery offences in 2021.

Kandasamy was sentenced to six years imprisonment with a non-parole period of three years.

This is the first of its kind case on domestic servitude in Australia, where Justice John Champion, during the sentencing in 2021, observed: “No one has expressed any sense of regret or sorrow. It’s a fairly remarkable absence of humanity. Your primary focus seems to have been on yourselves. You both grossly exploited a vulnerable person for which you should be ashamed. I am quite convinced that you both believe you did nothing wrong.”

The victim, a mother of four children, came to Australia twice to live with the Kannans in 2002 and 2004 before returning again on a one-month tourist visa in 2007.

Despite requests to be allowed to return to her family, the woman was coerced to work up to 23 hours a day caring for the couple’s children, cooking, cleaning, and doing chores.

She had tea and curries thrown at her and beaten with a frozen chicken. In exchange, she was paid about AUS$3.36 per day.

Kumuthini lied about the victim’s identity to paramedics and hospital staff, so she was admitted under the wrong name, reported The Guardian.

The outrageous murder was caught on nearby CCTV cameras and showed the five assailiants arriving in an SUV and cornering the victim, identified as Arivazhagan alias Vinith, on the busy road.

Upon seeing the attackers, Vinith makes a run for it but falls to the ground as he is chased down by the five men who then viciously assault him iron rods and wooden sticks in broad daylight on the busy street as people look on, the video shows.

After the beating, the attackers board the SUV and flee from the spot, leaving Vinith lying motionless on the road even as a man in a blue shirt comes to the victim’s rescue and tries to stop the men from escaping.

Vinith was rushed to a hospital but died enroute, reports said.

As per an India Today report, 29-year-old Vinith, a resident of Madurai, was reportedly involved in a murder case and had recently been released from jail on conditional bail. Wild Tusker Arikomban Relocated Away From His Human Friend In Kerala, He Builds Its Statue https://www.india.com/tamil-nadu/tusker-elephant-arikomban-kerala-kanjikuzhi-tamil-nadu-kanyakumari-wildlife-sanctuary-6116732/ Sat, 17 Jun 2023 13:38:11 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6116732 Wild Tusker Arikomban: A hero for one might be a villain for the other or a rogue wild animal like an elephant can be a troublemaker for some and a dear one for some.

This story from Kerala about an elephant named Arikomban describes the same emotions where VK Babu, a native of Idukki (Kerala) and owner of a trading centre for cocoa has paid Rs 2 lakh to create an eight-foot-tall sculpture of Arikomban, often referred to as “the wild jumbo” outside his store in Kanjikuzhi.

This is because VK Babu believes that Arikomban, the renegade tusker, brought him luck, and erecting the statue of the animal is his way to show his love and thanks to the pachyderm.

Babu used to grow ginger on rented land five years ago. When the rice-eating elephant came through, the ginger fields were demolished. Babu thinks that following Arikomban’s arrival, his farming prospered.

“Tribal people told me once that if the elephant tramples upon a ginger crop, that part of the farm will get a good yield. I have understood that it’s true from my personal experience,” he said as reported by eastcoastdaily.in.

“I have a fascination for wild jumbos and I have seen ‘Arikomban’ from a close range inside my ginger farm. It was six years ago and I watched the strongly built wild tusker with awe from a close range.

“In those days, the ‘Arikomban’ was not creating any trouble in the area other than the occasional farmlands raids and partial destruction of crops. There were six jumbos in the area that often ventured into the Chinnakanal region by crossing the reservoir of the Aanayirangal dam,” Babu said.

The sculpture has been created by Punnayar native Binu. Babu was able to describe Arikomban’s traits to the sculptor because he got a close-up view of the character. Children in particular from the community are swarming into his store to take pictures with the sculpture, add reports.

After two relocations, first by the Kerala Forest Department and the second by its Tamil Nadu counterparts, Arikomban is now roaming around in the Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary.

Prior to that, Arikomban, who had wandered into residential areas in Theni, had been deemed in good health by forest officials. Arikomban is currently wandering around the forest looking for his family and kids, and many people are requesting that he be returned to Chinnakanal, adds eastcoastdaily.in.

Superstition Struck Chennai Traffic Cop Hits Rationality For Toss To Avoid Accidents, Here’s How https://www.india.com/tamil-nadu/superstition-struck-chennai-traffic-cop-hits-rationality-for-toss-to-avoid-accidents-heres-how-6102989/ Sat, 10 Jun 2023 16:08:12 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6102989 Superstition VS Rationality: There is a very thin line between faith and superstition. It is a well-established fact that a majority of the population, not just in India but the rest of the world, is under the influence of centuries-old legends and their belief in superstitions and fallacies.

And it is even more surprising and painful when the educated endorse the irrational, more so if they happen to be a traffic cop who has a big responsibility of making sure that the traffic moves smoothly and the safety and security of the road users.

This is when things went awry in Chennai, Tamil Nadu where a city Traffic Police official made a trans person perform puja by smashing pumpkins and lemons on the ground to “ward off evil” at an accident-prone road in the capital city of the state, as reported by India Today.

According to the report, a special sub-inspector (SSI) with the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) brought a trans person from the police van and stood nearby while the full ritual was done.

The ritual included smashing the pumpkin more than once on the road and offering prayers around it. This ritual was carried out on the road near Vanagaram and Maduravoyal which is notorious for being accident-prone.

Following the incident, the inspector was reportedly removed from duty and reposted in the control room, says the India Today report.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Kapil Kumar Saratkar reacted to the incident and said while it was “well-intended” it was a “totally avoidable act by the officer who took his personal belief too far adding that GCTP only believes in “rational and scientific analysis and study of causes and remedies of accidents”.

Tamil Nadu Temple Shut Temporarily After Dalits Denied Entry https://www.india.com/tamil-nadu/kaliamman-temple-tamil-nadu-closed-dalits-6098543/ Thu, 08 Jun 2023 12:50:46 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6098543 Karur, Tamil Nadu: A famous temple in Tamil Nadu’s Veeranampatti was reportedly shut down after some Dalit devotees were allegedly denied entry inside the shrine.

Some people belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC) claimed that they were not allowed to enter the famed Kaliamman Temple during the recently held Vaikasi festival, according to a report by India Today.

Thousands of people arrived from nearby villages to participate in the festival which also included around 80 Dalit families who alleged that they were discriminated against by the temple authorities and not allowed to enter the premises, the report stated.

The families then staged a protest to demand action against the temple authorities, following which the issue was referred to Kadavur Tahsildar Muniraj. Muniraj held talks with the Dalits as well as temple authorities, however, both sides remained adamant on their respective demands and refused to budge, resulting in the decision of the temple to be shut till further notice. The temple has now been closed temporarily and the authorities are yet to clarify when the temple will reopen for the public, the report said

The Kaliamman Temple, a famed temple in the region that hosts the figure of the Hindu Goddess Kali, attracts a large number of worshippers from across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry annually.

In a similar incident, another temple in the state’s Villupuram district was reportedly shut down on Wednesday after Dalits were allegedly denied entry by people belonging to a different caste in a row that has been raging since April this year.

Amid the inter-caste tussle, Villupuram district authorities on Wednesday sealed Droupadi Amman Temple – which is run by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department – near Melpadi in a bid to prevent any law and order issues following the raging dispute between the Dalits and the dominant caste which has been going on since April, India Today reported.

A senior official, as per the report, said that the district administration officials held multiple rounds of talks with both groups but neither refused to give an inch, hence no amicable solution could be found to resolve the issue.

The official said the dominant caste had raised objections after the Dalit man had entered the temple in April this year, and later barred entry into the temple to people belonging to the Dalit community.

Amul Vs Aavin In Tamil Nadu: What Is The Latest Controversy About? https://www.india.com/tamil-nadu/amul-vs-aavin-in-tamil-nadu-latest-controversy-stalin-karnataka-nandini-6070605/ Thu, 25 May 2023 10:38:14 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6070605 New Delhi: After a major controversy that snowballed into a political slugfest in Karnataka over the entry of Amul in the state, a similar battle is brewing in Tamil Nadu over the Gujarat-based dairy brand. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has raised objections over Amul procuring milk from the milk shed of state-cooperate Aavin.

It’s Amul vs Aavin in Tamil Nadu

Stalin on Thursday urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct Gujarat-based dairy giant Amul to desist from milk procurement in the southern state with immediate effect. Writing to Amit Shah, Stalin drew the Centre’s attention to the issues arising out of milk procurement by the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (Amul) in the Tamil Nadu milk shed area.

Recently, it has come to the state government’s notice that Amul has utilised its multi-state cooperative license to install chilling centres and a processing plant in Krishnagiri district, Stalin said.

Also, Amul has planned to procure milk through FPOs and SHGs in and around Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupathur, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts in Tamil Nadu.

“It has been a norm in India to let cooperatives thrive without infringing on each other’s milk-shed area. Such cross-procurement goes against the spirit of Operation White Flood’ and will exacerbate problems for the consumers given the prevailing milk shortage scenario in the country. This act of AMUL infringes on Aavin’s (TN Co-operative Milk Producers Federation) milk shed area which has been nurtured in true cooperative spirit over decades.”

This move by AMUL will create unhealthy competition between cooperatives engaged in procuring and marketing milk and milk products.

“Regional cooperatives have been the bedrock of dairy development in the states and they are better placed to engage and nurture producers and to cushion consumers from arbitrary price hikes. Therefore, I request your urgent intervention to direct Amul to desist from milk procurement from the milk shed area of Aavin in Tamil Nadu with immediate effect,” CM Stalin said.

Providing a backgrounder to the matter, Stalin said till now, Amul was only selling their products in Tamil Nadu through their outlets.

In Tamil Nadu, like in other states with strong dairy cooperatives, a three-tier dairy cooperative system is functioning effectively since 1981 for the benefit of the rural milk producers and consumers, Stalin said.

“Aavin is our apex cooperative marketing federation. Under the ambit of Aavin co-operative, 9,673 Milk Producers Co-operative Societies are functioning in rural areas. They procure 35 LLPD of milk from about 4.5 lakh pouring members. Under this current arrangement, milk producers are assured of remunerative and uniform prices throughout the year by the cooperative societies.”

In order to increase and sustain milk production in Tamil Nadu, Aavin also provides various inputs such as cattle feed, fodder, mineral mixture, animal health care and breeding services for animals of milk producers.

In addition, it ensures the supply of quality milk and milk products to consumers at one of the lowest prices in our country. Thus, Aavin plays a vital role in improving the livelihood of rural milk producers and the meeting the nutritional requirement of consumers, he said.

Sperm Whale Vomit Worth Rs 31.6 Crore Seized In Tamil Nadu Coast, Why Is It So Costly? https://www.india.com/tamil-nadu/ambergris-sperm-whale-vomit-worth-rs-31-6-crore-seized-in-tamil-nadu-tuticorin-sea-coast-why-is-ambergris-so-costly-explained-6060487/ Sat, 20 May 2023 08:15:14 +0000 https://www.india.com/?p=6060487 New Delhi: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized 18.1 kg ambergris, produced by endangered sperm whales near Tuticorin Sea coast in Tamil Nadu on Saturday. The ambergris, also known as Whale Vomit is valued at Rs 31.6 crore. The DRI had arrested four people in this connection.

“We are grilling accused to know about their other gang members. We have recovered a few incriminating documents from them,” a source in the DRI said on Friday.

The accused have been identified as Eswaran, Anil, Anadraj and Bethane. All four will be produced before a competent court later in the day.

What is Ambergris or Whale Vomit?

Ambergris is often described as one of the world’s strangest natural occurrences. It is produced by sperm whales.

Sperm whales eat large quantities of cephalopods such as squid and cuttlefish. In most cases the indigestible elements of their prey, such as the beaks and pens, are vomited out before digestion.

There are conflicting opinions as to how ambergris emerges from the whale. Some believe that the whale regurgitates the mass, earning it its well-known nickname ‘whale vomit’.

Why is Ambergris so expensive?

Whale vomit or ambergris can burn a hole in your pocket. A kilogram of whale vomit can cost you upwards of Rs 1 crore. The wax-like substance is produced in the digestive tract of sperm whales.

Ambergris, a solid waxy substance originating in the intestine of the sperm whale (Physeter catodon). In Eastern cultures ambergris is used for medicines and potions and as a spice; in the West it was used to stabilize the scent of fine perfumes.

Ambergris has been called the treasure of the sea and floating gold. It is hugely valuable – it commands a higher price than gold.

Why is it illegal in India?

In India, the sale of Ambergris is prohibited by law as the sperm whale is an endangered species which is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act. The sperm whale was declared an endangered species in 1970.

However, in countries like UK and the rest of the European Union, it is currently perfectly legal to salvage a lump of ambergris from beaches and sell it, either at auction or on sites such as eBay.
